Is it cool to have manic depression these days?!

Question: Is it cool to have manic depression these days.?
Lots of people say they have it, especially celebrities.
How many people genuinely have it, how many people just get incredibly depressed or hyper in phases. Isn't that just the human condition.

There is nothing cool at all about it. I have several dear friends for whom it is a daily struggle. Maintaining that sense of balance and normalcy with or with out medication is rough, and it's hard to see people you care about go through that.

I think some people feel those ups and downs in their lives, and have a tendency to self-diagnose. Health Question & Answer

Bipolar disorder does tend to occur more in celebrities because the manic trait tends to make them more likely to be successful in their careers. It's still an illness and can be extremely devastating, causing people to be admitted and extremely embarrassed about their manic actions. It can also kill people if the depressive episode makes them suicidal.

Not cool. Health Question & Answer

manic depression is one of the most serious, most difficult to treat mental illnesses. if you have met anyone with this disorder you know that they are in a class all their own, it's not just the normal "ups and downs" of everyday life. it makes sustaining relationships impossible because these people can get violent, physically and emotionally abusive and a danger to themselves. i can't fathom anyone describing bipolar disorder as "cool." Health Question & Answer

More like we're all taking in way too many chemicals, far more than our bodies can cope with. And our diets are deficient in the nutrients we need to break those chemicals down.

Put those together and it makes undeniable sense that so many of us are troubled by anxiety, depression, headaches, fatigue, extreme highs and lows (a lot of the chems initially have stimulant properties, until the body is overwhelmed and crashes), even the 'epidemics' of obesity and middle-aged incontinence have ties these problems.

We've been running on junk food for too many years and it's catching up with us. Those of us born after 1950 don't know anything else, so we just assume it's normal.

It's not.Health Question & Answer

I'm sure there is an element of truth to that. There will always be those hypochondriac kind of people who want every disease and malady they hear about, esp. the new and "fun" ones. *rolls eyes*

But on the other hand, medical science is understanding more and more about these kinds of problems, and with TV and the internet, that information spreads quicker than ever. So lots of people who in the past might have gone undiagnosed, are now getting the right diagnosis. That might make it seems like more people are becoming manic/depressive, when really, we're just getting their problems labeled right for a change.

It does seem pretty fashionable to have problems nowadays, but the world also does suck quite a bit.
It's hard to say who's deeply depressed and who isn't without personally knowing them, but most people that think they are probably aren't. Health Question & Answer

I have friends with uni- and bi-polar disorder. With or without medication, it can be very difficult for the one afflicted and those who try to be supportive to her/him.

I would say be checked out by a physician, find a shrink you love and be very strict with your diet.Health Question & Answer

It is pretty much the human condition, the difference is how extreme it is and how long it lasts.

Really it is celebrities reminding us that they are human.Health Question & Answer

It stops being the human condition when your life falls apart and you can't cope any more.

Anyone who wants this illness is an idiot. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.Health Question & Answer
