Would you think any less of someone who was bipolar?!

Question: Would you think any less of someone who was bipolar.?
Answers:
No - my OH is bi-polar and I think quite a lot of him! It took quite a long time for him to get stable, and until he did my thoughts about him fluctuated as quickly and as suddenly as his moods. He's on the right pills now, and is smart enough to continue taking them even when he feels "normal".

I think I'd think less of him if he stopped taking them, because he could throw his whole life away simply by stopping his treatment, and that wouldn't make me think highly of him! It's not a case of "love you anyway", it's "love you while you continue to be this person." If he deliberately became the other person, I would struggle to love him at all.Health Question & Answer

I was very lucky when I was going through stages of manic depression that the majority of people accepted the way that I was and didn't push me away or discriminate. I was very grateful for that. I like people with bipolar because I feel a kinship and understanding of what they're going through. If it was a relationship I think that might be slightly harder work but I don't think I'd think any less of them. xHealth Question & Answer

Usually I think people have been misdaignosed when they tell me that, honestly. Most of the people who claim to be bipolar seem to be seeking attention. I have spent hours and hours with a few particular people, and never seen one indication of either mania or depression. I know one type of bipolar does not include phases of depression, but they ALL include manic states. I don't see it.

Of course, I would never think less of them if they really were struggling. I know what it is like first hand to suffer from a mental illness and be surrounded by people who don't understand. And the people who are incorrectly diagnosed, I just feel awful for, because it isn't their fault, it is the fault of lazy GPs who don't know what they're doing. They should be in counseling, not on meds.Health Question & Answer

NO!

I wouldnt think any less of *anyone* purely on the basis of them having a mental illness.

If the person had bi-polar and was a nasty person or did something bad to me, then it would be a different story ;)

Mental health still carries a lot of stigma. I live with depression and I think a lot of people make assumptins like if you are depressed it because you are "weak" and could snap out of it if you woke up one day and told yourself to be happy. also think people can be wary of you as they think that your unhappiness is catching and if they get to close you'll end up "bringing them down" too.

Health Question & Answer

There's no reason for someone to think less of someone just because they have a medical condition. -Everybody- has some kind of medical condition or other.

But people are stupid. And, bipolar disorder is actually very complicated and I don't think people generally understand it. People don't think less of someone who has a bipolar condition--they just get confused because they don't know what a bipolar disorder is.

Forgive them. They don't know any better.

I think that's the dilemma everyone faces: either tell people so that they will understand or don't tell people, so that they might occasionally be confused.

I think you're free to go either way.

Because people are so uninformed about it, it's up to people who have some expertise, such as yourself, to teach people, because, unfortunately, the medical community is not reaching out to the general public to inform them about it, but, as I've said, you don't have any obligation to teach people if you'd rather put your energy into other projects that are just as valuable.

Hey! Is this all about Kerry Katona.? LOL just kidding

Who's Kerry Katona.? I'll Google her and find out.

Health Question & Answer

No. Some people can't help their mood swings and that's something we should put up with. Sometimes, when people are acting unpleasant, we should try to see beyond what they're communicating to you. I know that seems confusing, but that's how I feel about it. Bipolar people can be as nice as others. It might be a rewarding experience to still be friends with them when they become happy again!Health Question & Answer

Of course not.

But if your referring to Kerry Katona , She is about as bipolar as my left toe. She is just a dirty drug addict, I don't know why she is given so much airtime, she should just slink back under the rock she came from.Health Question & Answer
