Questions on depression?!

Question: Questions on depression.?
Generally, when people seek treatment for depression, I assume they recieve counselling and / or medication.

In cases where the depression is due to chemical imbalances, I can see the need for medication.

My question is:

Exactly what can a psychiatrist / psychologist say or do.?
When depression is caused by actual problems in that person's life.?

Popping anti-depressants doesn't sound much better than taking booze for a temporary fix.

And unless the psychiatrist is some kind of superhero, what kind of magical advice can they give.? The problem (cause) will still be there unchanged.

Why would seeking treatment for depression help anyone.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
No, psycharists are not super heros, but they have been trained to recognize symptoms. A good psycharist goes to school as long as any doctor. They are trained professionals.
Besides dispensing medication when they think it is necessary, they can give you serious ways to cope with whatever actual problems you are experiencing.
Seeking treatment for depression has definitely helped me, and obviously many others.
There is no magical advice, but tried and true ways to cope.
I think a psycharist is definitely the way to go for serious depression.Health Question & Answer

My sister had depression about a year ago. She had counselling and anti depressants. it worked, but I think it wasn't really that that did the trick. It was more other factors that helped her...

I didn't have depression 'clinically' but was very depressed. My counseller just broke down all of my thoughts and worries into small chunks. she also analysed my dreams and was the only person I could talk to because she didn't give me funny looks when I owned up to self harming. She also taught me to channel my worries into everything i like and to concentrate on my hobbies and 'safe places'.

edit-

cousellors often can easily relate to ones problems, many people become that after personal experiences and wanting to help others.

You have to use behavioral cognitive therapy. It has to do with learning how to think positive. You cannot cure someone overnight by telling them a miracle answer. Try suggesting a notebook that they carry around. Every time they have a negative though cross their mind, ask them to write it down, but then they have to replace it with a positive thought. After about a week, they can see exactly what the negativity is caused from and are learning a way to make the situation positive. Health Question & Answer

Psychologists can work wonders, but are only half of the answer.Alot of times people are depressed over things they think are hopeless or they can not control. They will help u overcome or deal with these problems. But u still have to be willing to make a effort or they wont be able to help much.Health Question & Answer
