Should I switch counselors for my son?!

Question: Should I switch counselors for my son.?
I have been contemplating switching counselors for my son. He is 6 y.o with a mood disorder. Recent neuropsych evaluation also determined that he has ADHD, Cognitive Disorder with Executive Functions weakness as well. He has been going to the same counselor for three years, and has not made much progress if any behaviorally, socially, or emotionally. His current counselor is a half hour ride and the one I am thinking about is right down the street. His counselor knows us well. She knows that he is not a bad kid, and that I am not a bad parent... just my son has issues. I wonder what a new counselor might think. also she takes good notes and helped us get him aproved for SSI... a new one might not take as good notes. also I recently quit my job to stay home with him and might need some paperwork filled out stating why I can not work. I know that she will fill it out without any issues because she knows the problems that my son has at school, home and how it effects my job. Without me working, the new counselor would save us gas money. He might have issues though because he needs his psych meds and the new counselor's psychiatrist has a waiting list. also his current counselor does not talk with the school (He has severe issues with his behavior at schoolHealth Question & Answer

The pros do not out weigh the cons...is gas really that much worth the convenience of just going closer...you know how hard it is to find a Dr. to support you and your child...I would say, stay where you are...You are very lucky to have found what you have. We have not been so lucky and to date struggle with the school system, I would not want to see you open a can of worms you can not shut...Health Question & Answer

I think that you should stay with your current counselor. However you might want to research and see if your state has any programs, as well as the federal programs, to further help your son at school. Speak with someone in Public Health, or Mental Health with the state. also try the State's Board of Education. The actual names may be different where you live, but the intents will be the same.Health Question & Answer

i think moving him would be a mistake... this is health after all, not the same as changing barber shops. I def. think the cons outweigh the pros for this one.......

also, as a suffering of mental issues myself since child hood, i can tell you it is very hard on you having to change, especially over issues like this, and especially after so many years. i think it would be a disservice to your child to change therapists on him at this stage. ----good luck with everything.Health Question & Answer

you sound like you don't want to take risks in life, known at all. Health Question & Answer

I am 14 and i have had the same counselor sincenear the end of last year but my counselor is male. I think your son might be able to talk more or maybe even get some what better with speaking to a male counselor because sometimes i feel i cant tell my ccounselorthings because hes male, I think it would make him feel he can talk more about what he feels.
And i think you need to ask your current counselor about talking to the school to see if your son could get extra help to help him with his behavior. Because some schools have a extra help class i think.
I hope i helped.Health Question & Answer
