How to push myself through college? (recommend any non addictive ADD meds)?!

Question: How to push myself through college.? (recommend any non addictive ADD meds).?
In high school I did not study, i did not pay attention in class, i did not do anything. I graduated with honors.

I am now a student at a university. When I do go to class, i feel like my time is being wasted.

[I am completely restless to the point of pissing myself off, and getting up and leaving. So to avoid this from happening, I don't go to class.]

going to class just creates alot of stress and anxiety, and not living up to my potential makes me depressed. I am handicapping myself. I am almost positive taking meds for ADD would work, but am worried I will get addicted, or send me into a mania and crash in a deep depression.

I was diagnosed bipolar a year ago and have major ADD symptoms, and at this point in time, I have no clue how I am going to do in my future years of college. I'm lonely and feel stuck in this slow town. Q:How do I get through this .?Health Question & Answer

I felt the same way you did my freshman year of college. I found a solution. I transferred schools. It wasn't easy. I left the friends I had made behind and I started anew. But the school I transferred to was something worth my time. It was a prestigious institution with a very good reputation. It is the top public school in the region of the country in which I live. I found that I actually had to study and the professors (most of them anyway) challenged me.

To me it sounds as if you are not happy where you are. If you are not happy then the years of college ahead of you are going to be tough. You need to find a place where you feel like you truly belong. Start now and visit other schools. You will know when you have really found the one place for you. And instead of just looking at any school, start looking at schools with a good reputation. Look at ivy league if you feel that is what you want.

OR... it is possible that your current thoughts of college (ie, time being wasted) is related to your bipolar disorder.

Essentially, you need to find something that makes YOU happy and doesn't make you feel like your time and money is being wasted. College isn't always for everyone and perhaps what you need to do is go to college only part time while working at a worth-while job.Health Question & Answer

wow, you totally sound like me. I'm in college, not uni though. well anyways, all you have to do is get enough sleep. But i can't tell you what to do since i'm in the same boat, i however do go to class though, i just rush on work. But i never considered i have ADD i don't think i do. i have more of a computer addiction if anything, and that distracts me from what i need to do.Health Question & Answer

Ask your doctor about ADD medications and how they might effect you, as well as alternatives to drugs.

You say you feel like you're wasting your time. Do you have a specific reason for going through college.? If you have a goal to work towards that you can get really passionate about, maybe it will motivate you to get through your classes.Health Question & Answer

I would really suggest reading Healing ADD The Six Types by Dr. Amen to be sure that your diagnosis is correct. If it fits I would suggest checking out ADD-care at www.add-care.com. It is a totally natural supplement that rivals the stimulants and have been proven by brain imaging. Jef Gazley, LMFTHealth Question & Answer

Don't give up! You have lots of options!

Most ADD meds are non-habit forming, so addicaiton shouldn't be a problem. You doctor could work with you on what meds would be best with your bipolar.

Talk to your college's disability services office. They should be able to offer you assistance with some of your class issues. I have a friend who is ADHD and her college set her up with things like extra times to take tests, etc. I have another friend who used to work for a college disability office and go to classes to take notes for other people who had learning disabilities. If you've been formally diagnosed they are there to give you assistance.

You might also want to talk to a counselor, if avaiable at your colllege or an academic advisor for more advice. Tutoring might help as well.
