It's another name for manic depression (they changed it because the word "manic" can be viewed as derogatory) It is an illness very simalar to depression, except a person with bipolar disorder will have the times when they are sad, melancholic, down, etc. just like depressed people, but also they will have times when they feel elated (happy), so full of energy and an invincable feeling.
