Question: Is the medical profession guilty of diagnosing too many folk.?
with bi-polar instead of getting to the root of their problem. Fobbing people off with pills instead of applying listening skills and referral Health Question & Answer

I don't think the doctors are the problem; I think it is the increasingly impossible demands made by society that are making people ill. We need to build a sense of community instead of playing everyone for herself.Health Question & Answer

I think mental health problems in general are over-diagnosed these days, especially depression. GP's give medication sometimes for what are actually social problems, not medical problems. For example, if someone has just had someone they care about die, or are having money difficulties. Of course things like that are going to make a person unhappy, it would be strange if they *didnt*! I think it would be great it more dr's went down the route of suggesting counselling more and referring people to outside agencies that can work with them.

I dont think its all bad though. Im lucky to have a brilliant GP, and I really noticed the difference in attitude and skills when I had to see someone else once because she was on holiday. When she initially diagnosed me with depression she did make it clear that medication can only do so much and as Ive felt like this since childhood its important to get to the root of the issue. There are some good specialist services providing by the NHS to help people to deal with things like depression and OCD like coping skills courses etc.Health Question & Answer

doctors are as quick to prescribe as patients are to ask.
We live in "quick fix" time" so a simple solution appears as if it will work opposed to the longer work it out routine.
A good psychologist may recommend a visit with a psychiatrist for short - term use of medications whilst working at the core of the problem and inevitably the end result will be coping without the need of medication. Still, let us not disregard what was said above: There are people with legitimate issues that do need help! (I realise that is not what you were saying)
I would not blame the medical profession as much as I would blame pharmaceutical companies for pushing quick fix measures that society buys into where in reality it is often years of carnage that needs tending to, not covering up with pills
In our office we have everything from pens to clocks, calendars, tea mugs, etc...with pharmaceutical manufacturers logos on them! :)Health Question & Answer

Real bipolar disorder, with the crushing depression and the frightening hypo/mania, is an illness. It's undeniable. Meet someone who's in a depressed or manic episode. Talk to them. Then tell me if that's healthy.

I don't think the medical profession overdiagnoses. There are still many people out there with bipolar disorder who don't even know they've got it.

But there is a pretty high level of self-diagnosis, based on slight mood swings or the idea that the illness is 'cool'. Health Question & Answer

The only treatment for Bipolar is medication, so there's no "fobbing off" if the doctor is certain it's what the patient has, he is being responsible. Remember that a lot of people who claim to be Bipolar have never been diagnosed.Health Question & Answer

you are trained for this in your college. you are learning to be a doctor for the welfare of the society and for your welfare. do your duty and the other things will follow automaticallyHealth Question & Answer
