i was watching intervention yesterday and the girl had to be taken to the hospital just because she had cut herself.

because my friend had went to jail and they asked her what happned
and she has 30 plus scars from cutting and they didnt keep her she was released the next day....

You aren't arrested, you are taken into protective custody in order to receive an evaluation. Sometimes the evaluation happens quickly (when "business" is slow), but other times, there is a long wait, it just depends on how busy things are for both the police and for medical staff. It is also possible there was some kind of police staffing shortage during that time too. I'm sorry your friend had to wait so long.

If the police are made aware that you are a danger to yourself and/or others they can have you "committed" to the mental health department at the hospital. I've not heard of the police taking someone to jail for this situation, but it is common for them to admit you to the hospital for a specific period of time for a psychiatric evaluation and treatment. These are often called 72-hour holds. I believe each state has different laws about how long you can be held in the hospital, under what circumstances the police can have you committed, and when the doctors can discharge you.Health Question & Answer

if the girl who went to the hospital admitted that she was a danger to herself and attempting suicide or seemed to be in a dangerous state, that would make sense.
if your friend had scars but seemed to be in her right mind, there's no reason she should go to the hospital.
