Why does getting help seem so scary?!

Question: Why does getting help seem so scary.?
I'm eighteen, and for years now I've felt depressed, and no matter how hard I try it is very rare for me to find happiness. My parents blame my family history, which is rich in depression and suicide. I won't get too much into it, but I finally took responsibility and called a psychiatrist Monday and am meeting him next Thursday. Ever since, it's been on top of my mind and clouds everything else, and I'm already extremely scared to go. I'm scared they'll prescribe me with medication that could potentially make matters worse due to side effects I can't control, and even if meds are left out of the equation, just the idea of going there makes me scared for no specific reason. My sleep pattern was bad before, but last night was terrible; I only got two hours of sleep and came home to take a nap because my mind is gone, skipping two classes. I already feel like I'm not going to be able to fall asleep; I don't know why I'm so scared, I just am.

Is it normal for people with depression to have this problem.? I feel so scared and confused. I never thought a healing process would seem so threatening.Health Question & Answer

It's only natural you feel this way. The idea of having to talk things out, and medicine is enough to freak anyone out. :) First off let the psy know you are not keen to drugs. See if you two can't work it out without them. If it seems like it's a must them read up on them (in medical book/wed-site . . . meaning don't just "google" it. The road to wellness can be a rocky one, but it will be well worth it in the end. You have so much life ahead of you! :)Health Question & Answer

I wouldn't worry about it too much, I know for me if ever i have a doctors appt. coming up or something new like job, school, trip i get really anxious about it to where I'm thinking about it constantly. I remember one night before a trip I could not get to sleep to save my life! everytime i would start to drift off, my body would jolt awake as if jumping when someone scares you. this could be related to depression or it could just be your reaction to something new and unknown. I'm sorry your unhappy. I hope you find the help you need and ill pray for you, good luck =)Health Question & Answer

I've felt that way before and it sucks. You should be proud of yourself though because you're choosing to get help to make your life better. I see a psychiatrist and a psychologist and they aren't threatening people at all. They're just people there to help. It's the element of the unknown that is getting to you. Facing problems is never easy but in the end you'll feel stronger and better for doing it. Try not to jump to conclusions as to what will happen such as medicine and whatnot. If they do want to prescribe something ask questions about it and what to expect if you were to take it and then decide from there if you want to take it. The best advice I can give you is to have faith in yourself that you'll be able to handle what life brings. Think back to times you struggled and managed to get through. Good luck :)Health Question & Answer
