Is addiction hereditary?!

Question: Is addiction hereditary.?
Answers:
If I'm the judgy-judge of my family: It seems hereditary! My Gramps Family were total booze-hounds...the usual cause of death was 'alcohol related'....But my Grandma's people could drink & drink with no ill effects, then just stop and never think about it. My generation is like an addiction crap-shoot...either we're really messed up, OR we're not! No in-between-ers. I got the lucky (grandma) genes: I can drink, but I don't 'need' to drink. I know first hand, It's really hard (and exhausting) to get people who are hard-wired addicts to chill-out BEFORE the damage is done...denial I guess: maybe that's part of the addiction syndrome. Health Question & Answer

heredity provides the propensity for addiction, but what one sees growing up, what one is exposed to plays a huge role in whether or not one actually becomes addicted. Both my parents were raving alcoholics, as a result, I do not drink at all, not one drop, because I know I have the propensity for it. You husband is ultimately responsible for his own actions, neither he nor you can blame what he does now on his past, or on his genes... addiction is a choice.Health Question & Answer

Yes it is and also a lot of people that abuse substances are self medicating for illnesses such as depression or bipolar. Unfortunately those illnesses are also hereditary. Sorry hon; probably not the answer you want, but it's the truth.Health Question & Answer

i think it can be.

my mother and father are both alcoholics. my dad's dad was an alcoholic, so was his dad, my uncle is and alcholic, and so are all of his 3 children.

i am also an alcoholic/addict.... fighting hard to stay sober. i fell off the wagon for 2 weeks straight and last night was the first night i didn't buy any. Health Question & Answer

I'd have to agree with one of the other answers... it CAN be, yes. But if you are strong-willed, you can overcome it.

My husband's family has a long line of alcholism, but although he has an occasional beer himself, he has seen enough in his lifetime to not let himself get that way.Health Question & Answer

Alcoholism is hereditary. My father is a recovering alcoholic. Onle thing about alcoholics is they dobt necessarily have a drinking problem, they have a thinking problem and alcohol helps them with that. My brother has shown signs of alcoholism and I havent.Health Question & Answer

My mom is convinced it is or that it can be. Her father was an alcoholic and that is the reason she will not even take a tiny sip of alcohol. She even frowns on me for having a drink of wine with dinner, it really traumatized her.Health Question & Answer

Well, partly.

It is partly heriditary, as it is in the genes, but if you are stronged-willed, there is no excuse for being an alcoholic.

You can control yourself. Your life is in your hands.

hope this helps! =)Health Question & Answer
