The reason it keeps coming to mind is maybe because you havent dealt with it. If you suppress something that makes you feel bad it will have longterm implications for your mental health.

Depends on what it is. If it's something you need to deal with, it isn't a good idea to run from it.
If it's just bad thoughts that keep trying to plague you, replace them with other thoughts. Good ones. Sometimes you have to speak good things out loud. too. You may find that you have to do this several times a day.
What I am telling you is Biblical, believe it or not. Only the Bible would have you replace bad thoughts with scripture, which is the superior way to get your mind where it should be.

Find an activity and stay busy. Exercise while listening to loud fast-tempo music. What I do if I'm at home is spend an hour or so cleaning up the house while the music is playing very loud, or have one of my favorite DVDs playing in the background, usually a comedy or standup DVD. Something to make me laugh.

You just want to avoid sitting around reminiscing, and try to get out of your own head. Find something pleasant or distracting to do and replace the bad thoughts.
