Why am I scared of things that are completely unrealistic?!

Question: Why am I scared of things that are completely unrealistic.?
I'm scared of being home alone. Im scared of being away from my mom, im afraid of sleeping in a room too far away from ym moms room. ever since i watched 28 weeks later like 6 weeks ago, i've been like this. I am afraid of staying at freidns houses, im afraid of setting up online accounts with the irrational thought that I might somehow get in trouble, im afraid of crashing my computer when i never do anything that could crash it. People have said that I might have a panic disorder.? Whats your opinions.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I would not define your symptoms as a Panic Disorder per se. Although you may feel 'panicky', the reasons BEHIND it lead to part of the conclusion of a proper diagnosis. With respect to your mom, and fearing being away from her, this sounds more like Separation Anxiety, which could have been triggered by the movie you saw, but probably leads to a deeper-rooted issue. I know you said this only started recently, but if you were to dig deeper, I think you would probably find that there were times in your life (when you were younger) that you felt the same way but might not remember. Now, having said that, a Generalized Anxiety Disorder seems to be more appropriate (having general panic or anxiety in the absence of any real danger), but I am not so sure this is even the case, because you seem paranoid about the computer. What accounts would you be setting up that you shoudln't.? What would be the worst thing that could happen if your computer did crash.? It sounds like there is some sort of hidden guilt about something, maybe in relation to your mom; maybe not; but the point is, focus more on what is CAUSING your symptoms rather than trying to categorize yourself. Once you find the answers, you will feel better and the panic will be alleviated. Health Question & Answer

Yeah, it sounds like you have a stress or panic disorder. Or it could even be a sort of obsessive compulsive thing. In any case, it's not a fun way to live your life, being scared! A therapist could really help you, I think. And there are some drugs that might help take the edge off while you start to get to the root cause of these issues. Good luck! Health Question & Answer

I think that if its really impacting your life, you should see a therapist about it. Even if its just for a session, they might be able to diagnose you and recommend more therapy or they might give you some coping suggestions. It would also give you some peace of mind about it. what i suggest you do is do all the things you feel irrationally scared of, then when you see nothing goes wrong maybe you will convince yourself to stop being so scared. just an idea.Health Question & Answer
