Obsessive anxiety about nuclear bombs?!

Question: Obsessive anxiety about nuclear bombs.?
I'm not really sure what the deal is here.

For years, I've had nervous tics. When I get stressed, I blink more often, blow out air through the side of my mouth, wrinkle my nose, and tighten the muscles in my throat. The nervous tics seem to come in waves- never altogether, but rather I start with blinking, then move to the air, etc. etc. The worst is the throat muscles.

More recently, right before I went back to college (I took a leave of absence after my first semester), I developed an even more irritating habit. I am constantly paranoid about nuclear bombs. And everytime I think about them, I have to pray. I am not extremely religious, at least, not enough to be praying as many times a day as I am. I am afraid that if I don't pray, we will be blown up.

I also have smaller obsessions. Writing perfectly (if I mess up on a piece of paper, I usually throw it out and start writing all over again), touching things (say there are three pieces of candy on a desk and I happen to brush against one of them, I must touch the others as well). They are not consistant though, and the obessions only occur at random times.

Is there anxiety, or OCD, or something I am not considering.? None of these severally effects my life, though I am constantly on edge about the nuclear bomb thing, and I have a very hard time taking notes in class because I often mess up and have to re-write everything (or just give up completely).

Thank you for the help. I've never talked to anyone about this, so it feels nice to get it out there.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Anxiety, OCD..yes sounds like you have both of them.

You need to go talk to your doctor about this. It is a problem that can get worse. I used to have BAD anxiety.....I always worried about my health even though I was a perfectly healthy woman in her 20's....every time I would get a side ache I would think my appendix was going to burst....if I had a small stomach ache I would start worrying that I was getting the stomach flu.....if I had a headache I thought I had an annurism.....it's just anxiety.

Doctors can actually put you on meds that will stop this and make you feel more at ease. Health Question & Answer

it sounds like general anxiety disorder you should really see someone they can temporarily put you on some medication that you may find helpful. i had a similar problem i always thought i was going to drop dead for no explainable reason. i don't know why medication didn't work for me i just talked myself out of it and moved on and it's not a problem anymore.Health Question & Answer

perhaps you have OCD
dont worry about the nuclear bombs though,
if one blows up, one blows up.. regardless of what you say.
just tell god "hey, since i wont be constantly in fear, i pray that a bomb doesnt go off (near me) ever."
and be done with it.Health Question & Answer

Have a talk with your school nurse she can give you some better advice than people here can do, unless you get an answer from a nurse or doctor that may answer your question.
If you are older than that have a talk with your doctor.Health Question & Answer

This sounds like OCD. You are compulsive about praying, everything has to be done a certain way, etc.Health Question & Answer

its a typical OCD. I know someone that feels dirty all the time and showers many times a day. What can you do... you probably want to talk to people about it, but of course i won't be able to convince you that you will never be hit by a bomb.. if it's not effecting your life, then whatever. but if you want it to stop, you have to admit the problem, and pretty mcuh restrain yourself from touching the other 2 candiesHealth Question & Answer

Well, I don't mean to scare you even more... but the whole nuclear bomb thing is scary. And People should be thinking of it as a possibility. I just recently read an article in the Wall Street Journal about the possibility of a nuclear attack in the atmosphere above our nation - which in turn would complete disable ALL battery operated machinary. That would be devastating! It's a scary thing and we all need to be informed.

HOWEVER, you can't let it rule you. If you let it rule you you're wasting your life. It is important that if (in the strange chance) we are hit by a nuclear warhead you have lived the best you could up until that point. Worrying kills.

Maybe you could come up with an uplifting phrase or an idea that you could force yourself to dwell upon- instead of worrying about something that you simply have no control over.

Now, praying is a beautiful thing... and it's powerful. But, really- you're prayers to prevent a nuclear attack are not what is holding them off.

Be brave- chin up- LIVE YOUR LIFE.

This really sounds like OCD. But the more you think about the "tics" the more you do them. At one point in my life, my mom thought that I had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder because I use to constantly rub the tops of my thumbnails and this created ridges in the beds of my thumb nails. She was so weirded out by it.

I also had a few other tics that were funny like that- about not touching corners of walls, and not looking at the road lines if I were a passenger in a car. And it seemed the more I thought about trying NOT to do these things, the more I did them. It became another problem altogether that upset my phisical well being-- anxiety.

If you don't feel that you are in need of medicine for it, test yourself. Try changing your thought patterns as soon as you recognize the tic comming on. This really helped me and I have been tic-free (Lol!) since I was 13 years old. (I'm 25 now.) I wish you the best! ^_^Health Question & Answer
