I had both anorexia and bulimia and I found that an underlying issue I had was a need to please others, a need for control and an insecurity about myself. The battle with anorexia got very dangerous for me, and I had to decide one day that I was going to eat so I could live. Since you are struggling with bulimia, which I dealt with for over a year, I will talk about that.

It was a hard one to overcome because you get so used to the cycle and it just repeats over and over. You have to put a stop to it. One time, when you have eaten alot, just make the decision to not bring it back up. You'll have to "own" that you have eaten that amount, and realize that the discomfort will eventually go away and you will get hungry again eventually. You will feel very uncomfortable, but that is how I taught myself to stop the binge/purge cycle and eat "normally" again. If you stop mid-cycle (after the binge), you'll realize that the feeling you get is not worth bingeing at all, and you can stop doing it altogether.

You won't be perfect at recovery, so don't expect yourself to be perfect. But you will eventually recover. Forgive yourself if you slip up, but know that you have the power to put a stop to it. Take it one day at a time and don't hesitate to seek help from a counselor, nutritionist, loved one.

In my case (I have purging disorder which is similar to bulimia but without bingeing) it's due to Tourette's, which can cause compulsive behavior even when I don't want to be doing it.

There can be many different causes for an eating disorder, but most people have some sort of genetic predisposition for them. Some people have grown up in an environment where others comment often on weight or appearance, or have esteem issues from other problems. Abnormal levels of hormones or neurotransmitters can set off similar problems and cause, and bulimics often use sugar as a way to try to increase certain chemicals in the brain (especially chocolate and dairy products, which contain tryptophans that are similar to serotonin). Anxiety can lead to comfort eating, and then purging is a symbolic way of releasing the anxiety. OCD causes problems similar to mine (Tourette's) where it is an obsession that preoccupies your mind until carried out.

It's really difficult to just "stop", since often the root of the problem is body chemistry or long term psychological issues. The first step to recovery is sharing your problem with people you trust. Therapy helps a lot, and for some people medication makes a big difference (especially if depression, anxiety, or OCD are problems). I can only suggest to seek professional help immediately. This is a very serious disorder if left untreated. Have you talked with your family about this.? If not, do so and get some guidance.
