Answers:
I have in the past disagree with my psychiatrists diagnosis, well at least the one he gave my insurance company. I didn't exactly have a fight with him but I did let him have it. I asked him to explain why he submitted this diagnosis and to help me understand. He then offered me the opportunity to tell him what I thought. I explained to him what I thought and he understood, actually he wound up changing the diagnosis he filed with the insurance company. After that I basically came to understand that formulating a psychiatric diagnosis is not an exact science. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel leaves some room for interpretation in the respect that some of the symptoms which are listed are self reported by the patient. also treating a psychiatric disorder with psychotropic medications is or has been for me like a cr*p shoot and while a diagnosis may help a doctor know where to begin in terms of medication it is not by any means a formula for sucess with many patients. I have been told I have an atypically medication resistant recurrent depression yet my medications are a concoction of several different categories of psychotropics. The doctor is treating my specific symptoms and not a number found in a diagnositic manuel, so I no longer worry about what he writes as long as he is actively working with me to find an effective treatment. I know that is long answer and I am sorry for that however I will say one last thing, you have a right to question any professional who gives you a diagnosis. In fact as a patient is it your responsibility to be current on your situation and your diagnosis, if you don't agree with your therapist let him or her know. Good luck.Health Question & Answer

Any time you have a conflict with your therapist you first should discuss the situation and why you disagree
You may not have the whole picture or the final diagnosis. If you still disagree after the discussion let the therapist know you plan on going for another opinion. It's like any other doctor you have a right to a second opinion. The other thing to consider is do you disagree to the diagnosis or just don't like it. God Bless ReggieHealth Question & Answer

i just went in one day & told her i did not agree with the dx. and also that i wanted to wean off the meds. she tried to object but i determinedly told her i had taken my meds faithfully for # of years, and it was now time to get off to see how i would do. i also told her i was tired of all the side affects and they didn't really help that much anyway. she had little choice but to accommodate. i have med free for 6 months now and am fine.Health Question & Answer

That is a signal that I was facing a truth that I needed to work through instead of challenging its validity.Health Question & Answer
