Why are doctors so obsessed with prescribing antidepressants for anxiety?!

Question: Why are doctors so obsessed with prescribing antidepressants for anxiety.?
When the side effects are way worse than benzodiazepines, and they don't even work anyway.?

I don't really see how they are less addicting, if I try to go off an SSRI my life goes to crap in 2 days.

Yeah right, like the doctor is going to take paxil instead of xanax if he/she has an anxiety disorder...Health Question & Answer

Well there's big money in it for a start plus most gp's dont have the first clue about mental illness and things like depression / anxiety etc. Running out a quick script on a pc and buzzing for the next patient is all about hurrying up and getting the job over with as soon as they can. Many UK gp's need a full on boot up the arsse man. (Metaphor of course) A good few have had one from me and I've helped to get one taken into court for negligence upon someone I was supporting. Me and gp's are often daggers drawn which suits me fine. They stand to lose. Be careful about prescribed anti depressants, question decisions and medications and stand your ground with half baked lazy doctors. Remember you can legally access and examine your medical records anytime and challenge any aspect of treatment you are unhappy about !

because 80% of the time, the two go hand in hand. and they don't go into full effect for 6-8 weeks and most people don't want to wait that long to get the help or to feel better. and yes, they are addicting. that is why they are called a CONTROLLED med. When your body gets used to anything on a regular basis, it is going to be addicted. and when you cut it out all at once instead of slowly going off of it, you are going to feel like crap in two days. Maybe because you went in asking for something. You need to be your own advocate.

Did you try therapy before seeking help from your doctor.? It can be effective with anxiety issues. If you didn't, what did that tell your doc.

Benzos are addictive in that efficacy wears off and ppl want more and more. SSRIs don't have that type of addiction.

There are all types of doctors out there. Generally, I think GPs should refer everyone with a psych issue to a psychiatrist but that's my opinion. Some GPs automatically prescribe. Some don't. If you don't like yours, go get another. You are responsible for yourself and your own healthcare.

The best way to deal with anxiety is to have a very strick daily routine which does include some kind of relaxation routine at the end of the day. For me this is what works best...don't worry to much about it...almost everyone I've ever met has some kind of disorder...even the ones that appear to be perfect...this is crazy-being too perfect. Drink plenty of herbal teas instead or meds...there are a lot made to help you relax, cut all caffeine and definitely get a good walk with your ipod, walkman, mp3 everynight.Health Question & Answer
