A lot of people see AA as the ONLY way that they can get through their sobriety; however, for me, I couldn't stand being told that I couldn't do anything on my own. I have been sober for two years now, with the help and support of friends, family and God.
IT is DEF possible.
Good Luck

Thats the way I learned and its worked so far. Its benefits for me are I know whats required of me, I know if I do it the work/meetings it will continue to keep me sober another five years.

There are many other methods of attempting sobriety I have tried several and have not found any other program that offers lasting sobriety with such simple/basic requirements.

I do understand where your coming from, after your being in AA for 3 years sobriety.

I have often questioned the need to "keep coming back" myself, but ultimately my decision comes down to my fear of the alternative. So for myself I stay in the relative safety of AA.

I congratulate you on three years sobriety and a clear enough head to question where you are at in recovery today. I hope you consider continuing doing what got you this far.

(sorry but the Troll? in me can't resist pointing out that someone above claimed to be a "moderate Alcoholic" hhhehehehehheeehehe Kinda like "moderately pregnant!!!!")Health Question & Answer

I only went to AA for about 6 months and I've been 6 years sober. Although, I had lots of friends and family to help me through it. I'd say it's good for a person that doesn't have family or friends, it's good, but you can do it on your own as well. If you have to stay in AA to stay sober, you may need different help. I saw people like that in AA. They had been going for 10-20 years. It was almost like they were addicted to AA. It just depends. If that's the only thing that will keep them sober, then yes, keep going, but there are other ways. Good luck.Health Question & Answer

There are other ways depending on the individual. If they are strong willed they can stay sober without any outside meetings. I have done it for over 18 yrs.
There are religious groups, having a "shrink", other support groups, etc.
One of the main things is to stay away from bad influences (old buddies, family members, etc. that like to drink). Don't go to places where you know people will be drinking, again...family get togethers, parties, invites, etc.
If they cannot do it then they need to keep going to AA.Health Question & Answer

AA is a scam.. they hold you forever.. it's a cult... you really can't escape AA and they make you believe it.

i've talked to so many who are still going to AA and have been sober for more than 20 or even 30 years..

i don't trust AA... i was a moderate alcoholic.. i quit... (many times when i felt like it.. for extensive periods...) i didn't need AA nor anyone else...

i was drinking daily then cut it back to on weekends... now i have gone cold turkey only to drink on occasion, mostly holidays.

you must want to quit.. no one can tell you otherwise.. and AA along with other groups.. they have some knack or gimmick to keep you in their group or society for as long as they can.. it's like diet groups.. like jenny craig, weight watchers.. it's a scam but they sure keep their 'hostages' and bring in new clients daily.

that stuff scares me.. i see what it does to folks i knew... it changes them and not in a good way.

sorry, that's how i feel... this comes from experience... i went to a few AA meetings for a friend. i seen right through it the first night.. you can come in drunk and stay that way for years!

no thanks!Health Question & Answer

There's also antabuse that makes a person very sick if they take a drink. This requires that the person take a daily dose but it's a very effective deterrent.Health Question & Answer

I can just agree... There are thousands of ways to stay sober. Only the imagination can set borders regarding this topic.Health Question & Answer
