I am physically healthy...so why am I sooo depressed?!

Question: I am physically healthy...so why am I sooo depressed.?
My friend has been depressed for about 13 years now...mainly because he really wants to get away from his environment, but his parent s want him to finish all of his education before he can leave. It's too the point where he has become a recluse and completely apathetic.

He just had a physical and he turned out healthy.

Does it mean the depression is all in his head.?Health Question & Answer

Depression is not a physical illness, its a mental illness. It's always in someone's head. You can't tell if someone has depression from a physical- they need to be psychological analyzed by a psychologist. I'm 15 and I sorta get what he's going through. I need to finish my education before I can leave my enviornment. Unfortunately, I live with an alcoholic- he is my stepdad. I've sorta become reclusive as well because I don't trust people very easily and I don't want to invite anyone over in case he embarasses me by being drunk (its already happened a few times). We have to go to hotels and stuff like that because he's being intimidating. It really sucks.

I suggest you google "depression symptoms" for your friend. Below are some good websites, especially the second oneHealth Question & Answer

absolutely,,,we think then we feel from the thought...your friend is not a victim of his parents. He creates his own life...he can either finish his education & get moving or find a job but to be depressed is his own choice. When the body or physical stuff is not feeling well it is because the person is not being honest...so the thoughts are expressed in the body..both of you read a great book & when you get it open to the center to look at the chart, then read around it if you don't understand it..but you can even get it from the library...by Louise Hay "You Can Heal Your Life"....also look up by Abraham-Hicks "the astonishing power of your emotions" I listened to this on CD & both of these things changed my life but Hay's book did that 20 years ago & the other just this year. They are both great.Health Question & Answer

Depression is like a disease of the mind. Regular doctors are usally not going to diagnose this in a yearly physical, Phycologist will. It sounds like your friend is stuck in a rut. Im not sure how old he is, but if he is old enough he should do what best for him. No one can tell him what is best for him but himself. Life is hard, and people handle stress in different ways. He might be clinically depressed. If that is the case he should she a phycologist, and they could better diagnose him. I hope this helps.Health Question & Answer

I don't think it matters if you are phycially healthy or not, you can still have depression or other mental health issues. I think they are 2 different things. So you can be a healthy person with depression, or an unhealthy person with depression. Im pretty sure it wouldn't be as bad if you are phycially healthy though cuz you would feel better than an unhealthy person would with depression.Health Question & Answer

Usually depression is a mental illness although it has many physical symptoms its origin is mostly of the mind.

The diagnosis of major depressive disorder is based on the patient's self-reported experiences and behavior reported by relatives or friends. There is no laboratory test for major depression, although physicians generally test for physical conditions that may cause similar symptoms.Health Question & Answer

Depression is a mental condition, not a physical one, but can lead to physical problems as well. He needs to find something he enjoys doing to take his mind off what is causing the mental depression. Going to a movie, or just a simple walk in the park. Doctors can give him medication that will help also. Good luck and take care to watch him and your a good friend to care.Health Question & Answer

That's exactly where depression is....all in your head.
Ppl focus too much on the physical body being fit and neglect the brain and mental health.
At the end of the day your friend must do what pleases him not his parents. Its HIS life and he has a right to be happy and enjoy every minute of it. Maybe seeing his doctor might help with some short term meds but he should seriously think about moving if this is the root of the problemHealth Question & Answer

In a sense i think it could be all in the head, but not as one might think. What i mean by that is that it could be a chemical imbalance, or it might just be the stress is overwhelming him...but i'm not psychologist thoughHealth Question & Answer

No. There's no medical test for depression. It can be affected by your "mental hygiene" (thoughts), but also by inherited levels of neurotransmitters, so it's probably not "all in his head".Health Question & Answer

Wow that's just like how I was. It is kind of in his head, if he could suck it up and get over it he would be happier. Or just get in a new environment before it's too late:-)Health Question & Answer

No. Depression can affect a person mentally and physically.

Even worse are people that mistake depression as laziness.Health Question & Answer
