What is this behaviour symptomatic of?!

Question: What is this behaviour symptomatic of.?
I'm 21 now. When I was younger, I used to do this alot. I would walk to school everyday and think "If I see this person/car/thing, I will have a good day" and then if I didn't see the thing I thought about, I would worry that I would have a bad day. I still think like this sometimes.

I worry quite a lot about bad things happening in general. I'm always paranoid, especially if walking alone at night. I think about bombs going off if I go into town, planes crashing if I'm flying and I really panic if I see an ambulance because I worry that it's going to someone I am close to.

I know this behaviour could be symptomatic of something. I just wondered how normal it is to feel like this and if there is a name for it.?

Thanks.Health Question & Answer

The first bit is just superstition, like seeing a black cat, etc. A better thing to do is to list three good things that happened to you yesterday. Sometimes it's hard to get to three, but some days I find I get up to five with no problem. If you do this every day, it makes you feel a lot better about your life.

You sound like you have a high background level of anxiety. There are two remedies for this: drugs and therapy. Drugs like SSRIs (Prozac etc) work by boosting the amount of seratonin, a feel-happy chemical, in your brain. But a less extreme and more natural remedy is to take St John's Wort pills, made from a plant extract containing hypericin. It has a similar effect.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy works along the same lines as "three good things": it can help you counteract a negative view of the world and build a more positive view. (Glass half-full rather than half-empty.) The way you see reality is very personal, and if you worry all the time then the world looks a dangerous place. But if you have a more happy-go-lucky view, the world looks a lot more welcoming.

I used to think of my life as walking along a sharp mountain ridge, where the slightest mistake would plunge me into disaster. Of course I was anxious! But now I realise that I was wrong, and I see life more like a flat plain: I can wander wherever I like and I'm unlikely to come to any harm.

well everyone feels like that to an extent but its sounds like you have it worse than most people. if it is so bad that it is affecting your everyday life and stopping you from leading a 'normal' life then you should probably check it out with your doctor. you shouldn't have to feel like that all the time. it can't be very nice. your doctor will be able to refer you to a counsellor or maybe even give you drugs for anxiety or something. good luck.Health Question & Answer

Go ask your GP and get referrred onto a Psychiatrist. it is not normal to feel like this. It can be many disorders but it is no use getting answers off the net. You need to be properly assessed by a professional. clearly things are not right. Superstition and Obsessive behaviours can start to control your life. if you dont get help fast. You need to be properly diagnosed and therapy, and learn coping techniques on how to control these thoughts and feelings.

Very OCD and sometimes extreme cases of OCD can cause paranoia. I had OCD when I was young and it spontaneously disappeared. Pills and therapy can fix it, it is a miserable way to live.Health Question & Answer
