Answers:
alprazolam is adjunctive therapy that is used initially for a few weeks until the ssri and snri kick in. the lexapro and effexor take about 3-6 weeks for effects. alprazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine that will decrease symptoms of anxiety within an hour. the lexapro and effexor can manage anxiety after a few weeks succesfully, but until they start working, the alprazolam will be used to stop anxiety. he may keep you on the alprazolam for break through, if you feel anxiety you can take it as needed (prn). hope this helps!Health Question & Answer

Lexapro and venlafaxine (Effexor) are generally considered to be antidepressants. However, they also can be used to treat anxiety. I wonder if you have symptoms of depression as well as anxiety. (This is fairly common.)

As noted in the first answer, alprazolam (Xanax) is a short-acting benzodiazepine that is used to treat anxiety. Possibly, it was added to help you before the first two drugs take effect. I don't know much about your symptoms or their severity to understand why Xanax is being used.

It is unlikely that your doctor is giving you too many meds at once. If he/she started you on all three drugs at the same time, the dosages are probably low. However, what does concern me is if your MD started all three drugs at once. Generally, an MD will start you on only 1 or 2 meds in the beginning---for example, one med for depression plus one med for sleep and/or anxiety. If the MD starts you on 3 meds at the same time, it is hard to know which med is doing what. (Of course, xanax is the only med that would work very quickly.) Still, in a few months, the MD may not know which drug is doing what. Is the most effective med Effexor, Lexapro or Xanax.? Is it a combination of 2 drugs or a combo of all 3 drugs.? That is one reason most MDs usually add or remove one drug at a time.

If you are concerned with these questions, ask your doctor directly. You may or may not get unpleasant side effects. These effects are also something to discuss with your doctor. Finally, always remember you are entitled to a 2nd opinion.

Health Question & Answer

your anti depressants wiill help with your anxiety, well should help. I am on Venlafaxine and it makes my physical anxiety worse, i shake more etc.
My friend is on Alprazolam (is not available on the NHS over here in UK only privately) and she has rapidly become addicted to it. She has gone back into the private psychiatric hospital i was in with her, to detox off of it. She was always mega out of it when on it. She could drive or anything.
