Are mental health problems linked to low IQ? ?!

Question: Are mental health problems linked to low IQ.? .?
I don't want to sound mean or unkind, but there seems to be a correlation between low IQ illiteracy and mental health problems. If you come in this forum it seems that no one can write a sentence or spell. Does having a mental health problem mean you become illiterate and develop a low IQ.? How come the misspellings, grammar and sentence structure in this forum is so appalling.? Health Question & Answer

Answers:
NO, mental health problems are not linked to low IQ. I find misspellings, poor grammar and poor sentence structure in all forums. My son is dealing with severe mental health problems and he has a very high IQ. He rates in the top 5 percent. I think we have to look at the education of our children when it comes to spelling and grammar. I have always instilled good spelling and grammar in my children.Health Question & Answer

As most people have pointed out, spelling and grammar are not linked to IQ.

There are some studies that show that people with low IQs are more prone to mental health problems. This makes sense, if you are less prepared to meet the challenges of school, work, etc.. (as someone with a low IQ might), then you may be more likely to be anxious, depressed, etc...

However, there are other studies that show that those with extremely high IQs are also more prone to having mental illness, perhaps because they don't "fit in" or they may not be able to emotionally deal with the amount of information they are capable of processing (just and assumption, though).Health Question & Answer

Actually people with a HIGH i.q. are more prone to suffering mental health problems. Einstein was a genious, also nutty as a fruitcake. My uncle is in Mensa, he has mental health problems. i too have a tested iq of 152 and I suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder.

I think the common mistake is to confuse iq and knowledge, yes spelling grammar and punctuation may be appalling, as is mine most of the time, however this is not a reflection of the brains abitliy to solve complex puzzles which IS based on i.q.

I think if you are trying to sterotype people with mental health diffcultties as having a low IQ you are very very mistaken. The fact you mistake iq for knowledge and ability is very very bad indeed too.

A baby couldnt tie a shoelace, wright a sentance or even count to 3, yet can have an iq higher than you and I put together. (Dont worry, I'll pull you score up on average you see..)

The probable reason spelling and grammar is so appalling is that people on here usually want to get things out quickly and probably go a bit manic on the keyboard to get it out quickly, I know I do, so yes, once again, ability on a keyboard is not relevant to iq.Health Question & Answer

"grammar and sentence structure in this forum is so appalling.? "
Glad you have your priorities right, I'm a nurse and always check the patients' English Language and Literature capabilities before offering treatment.
There is no link between mental health problems and low IQ, you are confusing mental health issues with learning difficulties, but not to worry; at least your English structure and spelling is excellent, it is amazing what you can achieve with a spell-check button.
Are you intoxicated by the exuberance of your own ferocity or just ecstatic that you can spell correlation.?Health Question & Answer

This question is mean and unkind and actually rather offensive.

Have you checked any other forum recently. They are just as bad.

This is yahoo answers not a graduate thesis. Since when has formal English been a guideline for use of random internet forums. Seriously do you not have anything better to do than play grammar police on an internet site that takes questions from ages as young as 13.?

Actually mental illness is associated with creativity and high IQs. High intelligence can actually predispose people to develop mental illnesses.

please find something else to do with your time. and yes that is a lower case p and a.Health Question & Answer

No, I think you'll find that there's terrible spelling and grammar all over Yahoo Answers (and everywhere else). IQ is an arbitrary measure of 'intelligence', and itself correlates poorly with the ability to function well in real life. Many people with high IQs don't end up with their dream jobs and lifestyles, while some people with lower IQs do.

However, there is a connection between academic achievement and social class, and one between some social conditions and the prevalence of mental health problems.

For example, the most at-risk person for mental illness is a middle-aged man living alone with no job, few hobbies and interests, and generally few resources. There might be an argument for suggesting that people for very low socioeconomic classes are more likely to fit this profile. But really, mental illness can affect anyone, and will do so for 10% of us.Health Question & Answer

This question is a bit ignorant to be honest.

To paint with such a broad strokes and equate literacy problems and socially ignorant comments with a broad range of mental health issues is, lets be honest, ignorant in itself.

That is why people with depression and the like still feel ashamed in today's society to highlight their issues. And such illnesses don't care about class or education - it can happen to anyone.Health Question & Answer

I have suffered from Mental Health Issues in the past - Anxiety & Depression ! I am a highly intelligent male of 43 years of age ! Please treat every one as an individual & when you meet someone (for the first time), please take the time to get to know them as a person & as an individual & do not make generalisations such as this as it is so unfair !

I am an *Eternal *Optimist with a *Positive *Mental *Attitude (PMA+) & a bright (light & intelligent), sunny & cheerful disposition ! I have a personal saying that 'I will only quit when I am DEAD & not before ! I am an individual & unique in this world,as indeed other people are ! I have my own character & I have a 'maverick' nature !

There could be a lot of reasons why people often misspell or have poor grammar:

Dyslexia
Lack of Education
Teenagers and adolescents often used a shorter method of typing, as if they are in a chatroom or text messaging.
If the person is in a rush.

Many people with mental health problems have average or above average intelligence. I've known people with autism that are so much more intellectual than me or anyone I know.

I really don't think IQ tests have much to say about intelligence. It's just a bunch of brain exercises. And I've finished one that was 2 hours long.

By the way I struggle with dyslexia so thank you for making me feel even more insecure about my spelling!Health Question & Answer

I would argue exactly the opposite. In my opinion, mental illness has a positive correlation with higher than normal general intelligence and emotional intelligence. Your experience on the mental health forum of Yahoo! Answers is only anecdotal evidence. Most answers in most categories on this site tend to be of generally low caliber. My suspicion is that the average age for answerers on this site is roughly 18-20.

Technology doesn't help. Speaking for myself, i occasionally make spelling and/or grammar mistakes when using a computer or mobile phone as a way of communicating. I type as fast as i can, and in turn mistakes are made.
No, i don't think mental health and low IQ literacy are at all linked.
I know a lot of examples to prove this as well.

There is no direct or identifiable link, but the old expression ' that genius is close to madness' is in fact the opposite of the truth. The lower your IQ the higher the statistical risk you have of mental illness, though of course those of any IQ may be affected.Health Question & Answer

While I applaud your curiosity and recognition of possible correlation, your theory is incorrect.

Many reknowned geniuses have been plagued by mental illness.

I agree that the grammar, spelling, and sentence structure is apalling, though!Health Question & Answer

Misspellings, grammar and sentence mistakes are because of the fact that not everyone here is an english speaking person and in most cases it has nothing to do with IQ. Please, answer mine - .?qid=20081113151736AAIAqZS">http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...Health Question & Answer

It can be, but not necessarily as it is claimed that there is a fine line between insanity and genius. Not only that bad spelling doesn't always indicate mental problems it can also be a sign of rushed or bad typing skills.Health Question & Answer

I would tend to see it the other way around. That whole 'Genius is close to madness' thing. BTW, just because someone is illiterate it doesn't mean they have a low IQ. I have a very clever friend who's severely dyslexic.Health Question & Answer

quite the opposite people with mental heath problem can be very creative and intelligent Winston Churchill had bipolar disorder, like myself and its not just people with mental illness who can be not so intelligent Health Question & Answer
