Health Question & Answer

I have talked to two people with bipolar, and they both said that they would rather be off the meds. One said it helped him write and think better, and another said it made her more creative. Here is the problem, even though it may feel good to be manic, most of the time, people you love get hurt because you become careless (spending a lot, cheating, saying things you don't mean, doing things that are hurtful), and even if you do become creative and write or something, it is rarely finished because you are trying to move from one thing to the next so quickly and without organization. In addition, when the manic state is finished, the depression starts. Bipolar has the highest rate of suicide of all the other mental illnesses. My mother's mom had bipolar, and when she was just 17 her mom got her to take many drugs, and lose her virginity (her first boyfriend was actually her mom's boyfriend, without her knowing it until she saw her mom and him together). From what my psychologist and my psychiatrist have told me is that if you have bipolar that it's best to stay on medication because without it you have a much higher risk of doing things to hurt yourself because the medication stabilizes your mood to keep you from euphoria, or severe depression. Health Question & Answer

Only the wrong ones and even then I was on some of the right ones.

I lived undiagnosed and unmedicated for a long time. I made a mess of my life and the illness progressed. Now, I would be dead w/in 6-12 months w/o medication if I made it that long.

Work with your doctor on finding what works for you with minimal side effects. Med free always ends in disaster - suicidal depression, mixed states, psychosis, lock wards, jail, etc, etc, etcHealth Question & Answer

When I stop taking my medications and I become manic, of course I feel "better", but if I become depressed, I will feel horrible. If I am manic, I will sooner or later become depressed, so it's not really worth it to come off the medication.Health Question & Answer
