I believe you're referring to "Status Epilepticus," which is a type of seizure that is either recurrent or continuous for over 30 minutes throughout which the person does not regain their baseline mental status. First of all, I would like to start off by correcting you, Status Epilepticus can be treated using medication such as Benzodiazepines, Phenytoin, sodium valproate, Paraldehyde, or neuromuscular blocking agents. Its symptoms can be reduced, if not eliminated, through various medications as the ones I have just listed. Now, to answer your question as to how this condition may effect his future life, I do not want to alarm you but Status Epilepticus is the most severe type of seizure, hence its effects on a human body as well as brain activity are far greater than that of other types of seizures. For starters, seeing how it lasts much longer than any other type of seizure, brain damage has a much higher chance of occurring in the future. Continued seizure activity in status epilepticus is associated with neuronal damage. Seeing how your brother is still young and his brain is still developing, his condition may affect his brain's development. However, as long as he is prescribed 100% effective medication, this should not be a problem. Status Epilepticus is fairly difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are often related to other problems, but knowing that your brother has been diagnosed at such an early age, I do believe that is a plus. I'm sorry to hear he has this condition, one of my closest friends has been diagnosed with epilepsy and seeing her convulse the way she does everytime her symptoms return, let alone watch her attempt to remember who I was everytime she regains consciousness is rather terrifying for me, so I understand how overwhelming this can be for you. Your doctor as well as your family, and yes, that includes you too, should observe your brother on his prescribed medication, and if his symptoms worsen or do not cease, your doctor should be able to prescribe more efficient medication. It's all about the teamwork and observations over a period of time. Make sure your brother eliminates activities that could heighten his chances of having a seizure, such as staying out in humid weather too long, skipping his medication doses, activities that could cause injuries to the head, and so forth. No drugs for this little guy in the future, you be sure to check up on that being the big sister you are. Best of luck to your brother, and hope this helped! :) Health Question & Answer
