It's not easy, and your question is too vague for me to get specific. Some additions are based on chemical imbalances in the brain. Others are based on trauma. Some are just lack of willpower. You need an expert to pick the right cure, and even then, it takes patience, humility and dedication. You need patience to find the right expert, the humility to accept the truth, and then the dedication to go through with it.

The first tricky step is the right expert. A doctor can't diagnose psychological trauma any more than a psychiatrist can test a chemical imbalance. In some cases, serious addictions are downplayed by experts who either don't know any better and/or don't care. On the other hand, addicts often have a hard time hearing something they don't want, so when they DO get the right diagnosis, they deny it and move on to an "expert" that will tell them what they want to hear. Finding the truth and embracing it is the first painful step, and be ready for a lot of mistakes along the way.

With something this vague, the only advice I can offer is when you ARE dealing with an addition, try to put it in a familiar perspective you know you can deal with. For example, when I worked on losing weight, the feeling of hunger was new to me -- all this time, whenever I felt hungry, I stuffed my face. I had to find a way to deal with this new, unpleasant sensation. I realized that not eating for six hours was. . . well, like a bruise. I told myself it's like a bruise. It's unpleasant, you feel it, but do you panic and bandage it or take a painkiller.? No, you deal with it because it's harmless. When I'm really hungry.? OK, that's like a cut. You treat it, but with a measured dose of reason -- you don't mummy-wrap a paper cut. So I eat, but just enough to take the edge off. Changing my mindset allowed me to control the situation, and then I learned to control my body, instead of the other way around.
