There is a neat "light" meditation that the Buddhists use. In a very dark room, you close your eyes and "look" a the "light' which is produced by your brain. Flashes and rainbows and lines and squiggles. You just take note of it - you don't want to make it into pictures unless it makes itself into pictures. Just concentrate on it - and pretty quick you're asleep.

During the day you can do the same meditation by sitting down and sticking the meaty parts of your hands into your eye sockets - then draw back to make a slight vacuum on the eye. This will block out all light, and the slight pressure on the eyeball will create all sorts of interesting "lights".

And as in all Buddhist meditation, be conscious of your breathing.Health Question & Answer

Exercise, but not within 2 hours of bedtime. Have a warm bath, or shower, an hour before bedtime, then a glass of very warm milk, possibly with Horlicks, or one of the herbal teas, below, and use dimmer lighting. Put your mind in a position where it wants to shut itself off, and sleep. See insomnia treatments, in much more detail than can be included here, in section 3, at ezy build, below. Use one of the relaxation methods, in bed, after lights out, on pages 2, 11, 2.c, or 2.i, but they can take some time to learn, (progressive muscular relaxation excepted) so learn and become proficient in their use during the day.

An alternative is to use the EFT, in section 53, and pages 2.q, and 2.o, saying to yourself: "Even though I currently have a sleep disorder, I deeply and completely accept myself." (or choose your own wording) while you use the acupressure tapping. Some more; quick, and easy to learn, are at http://www.umm.edu/sleep/relax_tech.htm The progressive muscle relaxation, (most easily learned) guided imagery, and mindfulness breathing are known to be effective.

Find out which works best for you, in the daylight hours, so you will be prepared, come bedtime. For many people, a good idea is to develop a set "wind down" routine for the last hour before bedtime, so your subconscious mind learns that it is time to put thinking aside, and prepare for mindfulness, (awareness, without cogitation/purposeful thought) or the EFT, in preparation for sleep, but the idea with mindfulness is to not even think about sleeping: just drift off, naturally, during exercising those techniques.

Avoid TV, computer, or anything exciting in this hour, although reading a BORING! book is a good idea. I suggest that you try using the EMDR variant, below, prior to the mindfulness, or the progressive muscular relaxation, but after the EFT, if that method is chosen. Experiment, to find which combination works best for you.

In section 3 at ezy build: INSOMNIA: PAGE O - INSOMNIA: A COMPREHENSIVE POST a variant of Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing therapy is shown, which has been used successfully for those people suffering from insomnia, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and anxiety. It is easily learned, quick to use, yet can be very effective; although it is easy to be dismissive of such a seemingly unusual technique, give it a good tryout, for at least a few weeks, to see if it is effective in your case. I learned it from a book by a published clinical psychologist, on depression insomnia, and now use it every night, and find it works well.

No coffee, tea, or other caffeine (see list in section 7) within 6 hrs of bedtime! Try a cup of chamomile herbal tea, an hour before bedtime, and employ many of the techniques in section 3. Others may prefer Sleepytime, by Celestial Seasonings, Relax, Be Sleepy, or valerian root (valerian "hangovers" possible), from supermarket tea, or health food aisles. Milk, or cream should not be used with herbal tea. http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris Move your bedtime earlier 30 - 60 mns daily, until at a reasonable hour.

I get like that all the time! I'll be freakin exhausted all day, but once 10pm comes I'm wide awake. I wouldn't say you're an insomniac but you might just have a sleeping disorder or something. Don't eat too much food before you go to bed because (for example) eating breakfast in the morning gets you ready and alert for the day. Usually I just force myself to go to sleep. I leave my tv on and listen to whatever is on and just fall asleep eventually. If nothing simple works for you go see a doctor to see if you can get any tipsHealth Question & Answer

what do you do at night.? from the looks of it you are up on the internet. it is probably a better idea to just go in your room, drink some tea (sleepy time by celestial seasonings), and turn off the light. this might sound bad but sometimes you have to force yourself to sleep. when you're in bed, clear your mind of everything. don't think of work tomorrow, or what you did, or have to get done. just lay there and concentrate on falling asleep. before you know it you will be snoring.Health Question & Answer

Try making sure that you get up early. also you should try not to be on the computer or watch tv for a couple hours before you want to go to sleep.(Yes I know its REALLY HARD) . Try reading something.
I have the same problem and I hate it. I tend to stay up later because it gives me time to myself but then I end up staying up alot later because of being on the computer.
One doctor told me that because I get on the computer it gets my mind wired up and when I finally lay down my mind doesnt want to stop working. Its 3 am here and if I lay down I won't fall asleep until at least 5 because my mind will think of everything.
I wish you the best of LuckHealth Question & Answer

put away all things (tv, computer, to do lists, phone, foods, etc.) 30 mins before you plan to sleep.

in that 30 mins do a ritual - bathroom stuff, gentle stretching, think of the positives from the day, come to a state of peace.

get to bed and make sure all your distractions are long gone. force yourself to see black. focus on your breath. tell yourself "relax". if your mind starts to distract, go back to black, breathing, and "relax".Health Question & Answer

omg i hated going thru sleepless nights. after trying all the typical things like counting sheep i have found the best way to fall asleep is to try and force yourself to stay awake. i would lay in bed and force my self not to blink. that alone would make me blink. the constant blinking put me to sleep fast. Health Question & Answer

Things that I have tried and have worked in the past:
1. A warm bath
2. Reading a book in bed
3. Having a snack before bedtime (something with carbs)
4. A glass of milk
5. Visualizations
6. Deep, slow breathing (like in meditation)

Hope this helps. =)Health Question & Answer
