How many people on here with mental health problems have had problems abuse from police?!

Question: How many people on here with mental health problems have had problems abuse from police.?
Or have any of your family or friends with mental health problems abused.?

A GP told me last year that abuses by the police of mental health patients while the patients were in their homes happens a lot. It seems that reading between the lines from the conversation with dr. that has the police always get believed the patients wont report it or if they do they get called liars. One patient was screamed at in the face for literally just standing in the middle of the room motionless and scared without saying anything. When the patient asked him to stop screaming at her he arrested her for beaching the peace and handcuffed her. When she said she had done nothing he said in a very *uck you arrogant tone, that his colleagues will just the same as he does - IE they would lie. The best part was that there was a CCTV camera in the room just 5 feet from the screaming that caught it all! The footage I believe is being given to the press to show how vulnerable people who the police are supposed to protect get abused instead.

Earlier this year Mind ran a campaign called another assault. Part of that was to highlight police abuses of mental health patient who have not been violent to warranted rough handling by the police and that such actions serve to make them more fearful of calling for help and of the police in general as who wants to be abused when your ill.?

So I was curious if anyone on here had any similar experiences with the police to see how bad the problem is country wide.? If you or anyone you know have problems, Was it reported.? If not was it because you feared you would not be believed or that next time the abuse would be worst.? If you did report what was the outcome.?

And before anyone says that they must have done something or the police would not do anything to them - live in the real world. Abuses take place in care homes. Childrens' homes. You name it and abuses can and do occur. If you have never had it happen to you then I'm glad but it is people who claim it does not happen that allows it to contiue and is a perfect example of why people who have been abused don't report it. And before someone with more time on their hands than they should have, picks out any of my spelling, grammar or puncuation mistakes - you point will be.?

To the sensable answers: As you will gather I'm aware we have a troll problem on here and thanks for your sensable responces. I'm bound to now get at least one that will think they are witty and say you spelt........ wrong!

Thank you for highlighting this problem,I have Bi-polar Disorder and have had some bad experiences with the Police during manic phases.I know that I am a handfull during these phases but my brain was not in a normal way of thinking,
Some Police can be very rough with mentally ill patients, maybe because deep down they don,t know how to handle the situation.I have had this happen to me about 3 times. One WPC accused me of threatening to kill her which would be classed as a serious offence and was a total lie.
I reported the Officers for their roughness as one felt like he was breaking my arm.I feel there is a need for specially trained Officers in this area.
I would also like to say that I have come across a couple of Officers who have dealt with a situation properley and have been really helpfull and I would like to thank those people.
I really think it depends on who you get but it does happen a lot.

I don't know anything about mental health problems but i would like to think that that this not the norm when in comes to how the police treat people with such problems.

i know many police officers and they would never act in the way you described although with anything, i do realise you will get some 'bad' ones and unfortunately that is what you're going to hear about rather than the good ones.

If any abuse happens, be it by police, care workers, family, anyone in a position of trust or otherwise, i would always say you should report it.

i know this doesn't help answer your question but i just wanted to say thatHealth Question & Answer

I have had one encounter with the police and they thought I was on drugs when I was really mentally ill. I did everything they told me and they cut me a break. They let me go to a substation and get a cab ride home as opposed to being booked into the county jail. Mentally ill or not I did commit a crime that warranted jail time. They were pretty cool with me and I was cool with them.Health Question & Answer

you spelt wrong! joking!! I know what the police in this country can be like. I was suffering with depression due to medication. The police called on my home looking for a previous tenant and because I could hardly talk to them they took that as a sign of weakness and started taking the p1ss. One said to the other "we've got a retard on our hands, leave the loon to it"
Two weeks later and I was fine and went to the police station to complain about their behaviour. When I finally met them, they couldn't look me in the eye, but you know what, they both closed rank and completely denied it. Both of their notepads were identical! But...I knew and they knew and they felt a lot smaller than I did!Health Question & Answer
