The origins of the stigma associated with Schizophrenia came from two places, the old med evil times church. In more modern times the stereotypes about Schizophrenia come from the popular media. The biggest problem with Schizophrenia is most people are ignorant about what Schizophrenia is and how it affects most of its sufferers. The fact that most people today and in med-evil times were not empowered with facts about Schizophrenia allowed wife's tails and superstitions to fill the voids in peoples understandings.
The med-evil church of course suggested to people that Schizophrenia and most other mental illness was the work of the devil. Schizophrenia was long considered a sign of demon possession in the old world due to church teachings. Schizophrenia and other mental illness was often seen as a disease brought on by moral decay not defects in brain chemistry and abnormal brain function. For many years the church and old wife's tales owned the day and people with Schizophrenia suffered unimaginable difficulty for problems they could not control.
Then came the time of scientific enlightenment and eventually the mysteries of the brain were discovered one by one. Eventually the brain yielded its many secrets and in so doing Schizophrenia was discovered to be a disorder of brain chemistry and function. Unfortunately as the influence of the church as waned another new and potent force of mis-information rose up to take its place in society called Mass Media. Mass Media lives not on truth but on what is vulgar, hurtful, funny, bloody and sensational. Mass media portrays all mental illness either as funny ha ha or deadly since only these two things sells movies, enhances news paper circulation, promotes higher television ratings during sweeps week and otherwise makes money for media outlets.
Schizophrenia and those who suffer from it must be kept the modern day mosters. Thise with Schizophrenia are the new demons living in the dark places festering like flies in the underbelly of our society. It is not in the interest of the mass media to paint a humane honest picture of Schizophrenia sufferers because to do so does not sell adveritising space on whatever media out let is fighting for its share. Showing any of the millions of people who suffer from Schizophrenia in quiet desperation hurting no one and more often than not being victimized by others never makes the news.
Oh but let one person suffering from Schizophrenia go off in the stereotypical way killing maming and terrorizing the public and the media is all over it. Helicopters will be flying over head in packs from news outlets trying to scoop the competitor media outlets. Oh if the blood is flowing and the body count is high because, of one errant hapless soul suffering from Schizophrenia you can count on it to make news around the world. If there was not an appitite for the blood and gore fest in the media then it would not be covered. Truth about Schizophrenia is out there but, few bother to seek it out.
Its easier to hate or marginalize those who suffer from Schizophrenia than it is to go out read and empower yourself with facts about Schizophrenia. Its easier to laugh at the crazy people than it is to find ways to help such people live life to the fullest. The worse rub is people blame people suffering form Schizophrenia for being homeless and not taking their medications. When you are homeless you must have your witts about you every minute or you WILL be someone's victim thats just the nature of life on the mean streets.
If you suffer from Schizophrenia the medications needed to control its features causes them to be less alert something they can ill afford on the streets and in the mission. So to survive on the streets a Schizophrenia sufferer must not take their medication to stay alert but in so doing their mental illness returns with a vengence. We do not offer Schizophrenia sufferers a safe place to take their medications like a group home. Then society is shocked when some poor hopeless person with Schizophrenia living on the streets snaps and does something horrific. Most people suffering from Schizophrenia are the victims of violence not the cause of violent to others. the only reason people think Schizophrenia = violence is because, in the news rooms Schizophrenia = higher ratings \ circulation and in movie studio board rooms Schizophrenia = bigger better box office receipts. It is the stigma that is associated with the mental illness, some but not all people who suffer from schizophrenia are violent, but people concentrate on the (bad things) per say. So naturally people who have a mentall illness must be violent because I heard something on the news or I knew someone who was, thats how stigmas about mental illness get started!Health Question & Answer
