So I am a 23 yr old female. I was just put on Prozac last monday. The doctor said it will take 4-6 weeks to feel the effects and that I will only be on it 6 months. Has anyone out there been on Prozac or currently on it.? Does it work.? I have anxiety and panic attacks alot. My doctor has also given me .25 Xanax for whenever i feel a attack coming on. Different drugs work for different people. Prozac is an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) which in a short sense, increases the levels of serotonin released in your brain. Serotonin and Dopamine and hormones like that can regulate your mood and your happiness.

Prozac does indeed take a long time to work, as do most anti-depressants. If you feel side effects, talk to your doctor immediately. If you do not, stay on the drug and see if it works. Like I said, different drugs work for different people. If this doesn't work, try different classes of anti-depressants. (SNRI's, MOAI's, etc)

Remember, there may be side effects like sexual dysfunction, serotonin syndrome (rare), insomnia, dizziness, dry mouth, etc.

But try it to see if it works. Xanax is a fast acting benzodiazepine which is anxiolytic (anti-anxiety). You're on the lowest possible dose for that anti-anxiety drug, but it works fast. Faster than the anti-depressant, and seeing as it is a benzodiazepine, you should feel the effects within 15 minutes to one hour, and it should last a few hours.

If you need any more information, just search things on google or ask your doctor for more information on either drugs. You can get sheets from him which will tell you all you need to know, and when you get these prescriptions filled the pharmacist should be able to answer questions as well. My e-mail is on my account should you have any answers you wish to ask me.

i am currently on prozac and have been for a while. to me it makes me feel like if some thing goes wrong that its no big deal before i was on it id be trippin over it but every one is different it might affect you differently to but if you have thoughts of suicide talk to your doctor to immediatly change your meds.Health Question & Answer

I've been through the medical mill - have been on Lexapro, Paxil, Wellbutrin and several others. Am presently on Prozac and frankly, I still don't feel as though it's working all that well. Everyone's body/brain chemistry is different so it takes tinkering with meds before you hit on the right one.Health Question & Answer

It may work, it may not. There is no "best" medication for anxiety or depression. Some work for some people, and not for others. That's why there are so many - everyone's body chemistry is different.Health Question & Answer
