Can my psychiatrist force me into a psychiatric hospital? been twice before in past?!

Question: Can my psychiatrist force me into a psychiatric hospital.? been twice before in past.?
i have been to a psychiatric hospital twice. If i end up going back, im going to end up having to go to State, for a long term stay. :(. I am starting to have bad psychotic episodes. Im going to tell my psychiatrist but i dont want to take meds. they have made me gain nearly 40 pounds from the different anti psychotics and depressants, and twitches and other stuff. If i refuse to take the meds, and he thinks im not in the right state of mind, can he have me put into the psychiatric hospital.?Health Question & Answer

In the United States at least the standard for putting someone in a mental hospital is the following...

A person must be deemed by two psychiatrist's to be a clear and present danger to themselves or others before they can be involuntarily committed to a state mental institution. Generally in the USA the doctors in the institution just give you the medications and resolve your symptoms then let you back out on the streets.

You can not live on the medications because of the side effects especially if you are homeless. So most people go back off their medications the negative psychiatric features of their illness return and they must be re-admitted into a mental institution again. This soon becomes a vicious cycle that seems to never end.

Why would you have to go to the state is this a financial issue, most state cases have ran out of insurance. If weight gain is a concern tell your doctor some people gain weight on some bipolar meds and there are alternatives that don't usually cause weight gain. But yes if you are a danger they can hospitalize you but it is not easy to force. If you feel you are not stable I would hope you wouldn't need to be forced.Health Question & Answer

ahhh i sense you are bi-polar... this is my suggestion to you. Tell your doctor to find you something that will not give you twitches and other stuff, and will not make you gain weight. Lexapro is known for it's little to none side effects, and abilify is known for not making people gain weight. If you are showing pychotic manic episodes then yes your doctor can put you in the pysch ward, and more than likely he will.... i will tell you i think you are bi polar because u don't want to take meds, this is why more than half of people who are bi polar end up in psych wards with severe manic episodes and / or get labeled on top of it all as scitzo-effective. If you are either of these please take my advice and tell your doctor your concerns about drugs that make you feel crappy, but be willing to take some that may not make you feel crappy.Health Question & Answer

I'm not sure about the current laws regarding this, but when I went to college, I recall that a psychiatrist cannot put you in a psychiatric hospital against your will, unless you present a danger to yourself or others. You will have to sign paperwork if you're not a danger. However, once you sign those papers and enter, they pretty much own you.Health Question & Answer

yes he can if he feels you are a threat to yourself or to others. Did the meds help.? If they did then what is worse a few extra pounds you can work off or feeling psychotic.? When you were in the "hospital" how did you feel.? Did it help.? I've been 4 times and got better they didn't keep me for good. Maybe it'll help.Health Question & Answer

It depends, if your in really bad mental condition then yes he could.Health Question & Answer
