A friend of mine is depressed?!

Question: A friend of mine is depressed.?
He acts like he has absolutely no self esteem, but he's one of the smartest, strongest, and most unusual people I know.

His IQ is over 130. He was reading on a high school graduate level in first grade, reads over 1000 words a minute, can memorize a picture after looking at it for less than 3 seconds, scored a 30 on his ACT with a perfect score in two subjects, uses the heaviest free weights in the school gym, and once picked up my dad's pontoon boat by himself (I don't know how much it weighs, but I couldn't do it :P).

How can a guy like that be depressed.? It's like all the above accomplishments don't matter. If he DOES do bad on a test or fail to lift something, he gets even worse.

I'm trying to get him to see a doctor, but he doesn't want anything to do with one. He doesn't want to take any pills because he thinks they'll just mess him up more.

Is there anything I can do for this guy.? I almost think he's joking, but if he is, it's awfully convincing.Health Question & Answer

It must be a lonely world when you're smart and most everyone around you is not so smart. Pills might indeed mess him up; they messed me up. Do your best to be there for him, listen without judging him, and occasionally recommend a therapist, but not to the point that it's all you say to him.Health Question & Answer

Intelligence has nothing to do with depression. He has very high standards for himself and becomes depressed when he can not meet those standards. Why bother asking him to see a doctor.? Meds don't solve the issue, although they might help with the symptoms. A therapist could help him solve his problems. He is not weak for seeing one either so remind him of that. It takes a strong person to get help. Health Question & Answer

it really doesnt matter what position in life someone is in. but some people like to be absolutely perfect and if they think they're doing less than that they might get really stressed out and cause a chemical imbalance in their brain. depression is not something to mess around with, and once depressed it takes a long time to resurface. keep an eye on him for a while and talk to guidance counselors or something.

best of luck.Health Question & Answer

hey ,
this guy seems like superman or something. The best thing you can do is be there for him as a friend. You cant solve his depression for him, it's something he has to work out by himself. So my advice is just to be around in case he needs anything, but try not to force him into counseling or anything. Health Question & Answer

your friend sounds like he is suffering from clinical depression. Intelligence has nothing to do with this, and I don't believe he is joking. If he refuses treatment at this time, the only thing you can do is be there for him, listen and show you care. Hopefully in time he will agree to get help.Health Question & Answer

maybe nothing is challenging him and that he feels like if he does bad u'll all look down on him and feel likes he can't messed up u should also look in to his personal life making sure his parents don't hurt himHealth Question & Answer
