Hi Gabe,

Psychosis is a symptom not a disorder. Psychosis is a loss of contact with reality, usually including false ideas about what is taking place or who one is (delusions) and seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations).

I myself have just been dx with BP also. Most people that are BP it takes a while to get this dx. A lot of people that are BP were dx with depression, anxiety and some with psychotic features.

As you already know I hear voices and have now meet many other people that are BP that also hear them. Voices can and do cause psychosis.

Take care my friend.

Were they made by the same person.? Getting diagnosed with bipolar takes months to do correctly, because mood episodes can last for several months. If you had rapid cycling bipolar where you are up and down all day it can be mistaken for other disorders so they have to watch you. If the two diagnoses were made by different doctors it could be that there is a difference of opinion, or that the first doctor didn't have a background file to tell him what your past history was like. It is a complicated process which is why doctors go to med school for 8 years to get good at. You can call yourself whatever you want but your symptoms are the same. I will say I am schizophrenic a lot when I am manic because at those time I won't admit that I am manically depressed, but when I come down and look at the aftermath I will say yeah, I am schizoaffective:bipolar type. The important thing is to treat the symptoms, screw the labels.Health Question & Answer

From what I understand, Bipolar disorder can have Psychosis or not have Psychosis it depends on how bad the mania/depression is. Not all people with bipolar will have psychosis nor will all people who do have psychosis with bipolar have the psychosis all the time.
