Are these hallucinations?!

Question: Are these hallucinations.?
Hi all... I have some mental issues.. I know that I'm at least bipolar II... I've never had what is considered a major manic episode that can get me arrested, but I've lived pretty strangely with tattoos when i was down, or screaming rages, and quitting my job when fed up, but not without another job. I on 3 occasions (the last one being about a year ago) can remember seeing things.. once there was nothing there, i saw and let my mind run wild, a beast in the chalk swirls on a chalk board and i immediately went to the board and drew what I saw and freaked everyone out because it was ghastly... and twice.. when trying to go to sleep.. would close my eyes.. would see gruesome flashes of demons or gory monsters flash through my mind totally freaking me out and starting a major panic attack. my eyes weren't open.. was it just my imagination or would this be considered hallucinations.? I can't afford psychiatrists... I'm being treated by my general practitioner that has bipolar people in her family. i am currently trying seroquel and lexapro. i used to have seizures from vasovagal syncope.. so a lot of drugs like wellbutrin are out of the question. my fear is that these are hallucinations and i should be treated for bipolar I... maybe the same drugs.. but scary to think it's that bad.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Hi, This is Stacey. I have bipolar II as well. I take Tegretol and Risperdal. The Risperdal helps me from not having the hallucinations.
The Tegretol helps me with my mood swings.
How is the seroquel and lexapro working for you.?
Do you have any type of medical insurance that would help you pick up the cost for a psychiatists.?
I see Dr. Ahmed in Camp Hill PA 3 times a month.
I know that before I was on the Risperdal, I use to hallucinate as well.
It is the scarist thing to go through. I would seee things moving, saw the eyes of a demon, it really freaked me out.

Good Luck with your medication your on, I hope you don't have to go through too many more hallucinations.Health Question & Answer

If you've never had a major manic episode, you may actually have Borderline Personality Disorder. In some ways it's similar to Bipolar, but it's more baseline to depression/baseline to anger than mania to depression.

Diagnosis needs 5 of the following:
-frantic efforts to avoid abandonment
-unstable and intense relationships
-unstable self image
-impulsivity
-suicidal or self-harming behavior/threats
-mood swings (not mania)
-feelings of emptiness/worthlessness
-anger
-delusions or dissociation

You really need a proper diagnosis from a specialist, since the meds used to treat BPD can be different than Bipolar meds. It might help you to see a psychiatrist for a session or two to get a proper diagnosis of your condition (because no one here can really know), and have them cooperate with your GP for med monitoring. Most GPs aren't equipped to handle complex mental health cases/diagnoses.

What you are seeing seems to fit more with a delusion (where you add information to something real) than a hallucination.

I'm assuming you live in the US (because most other western countries have socialized healthcare).. there are actually a few options if you can't afford a psychiatrist. Most states have sliding-scale fee mental health clinics, where you pay based on your income. If you have very low income, the visits and meds may even be free. Do a search for "sliding scale" "mental health" and your city name (or the nearest big city). Or ask your GP for advice.Health Question & Answer
