Drug addicts come from all walks of life?!

Question: Drug addicts come from all walks of life.?
I have been struggling with addiction for 20 years. Went to rehab this summer for 2 weeks and was only discharged because insurance played out. Life seems so hard now living without drugs to help deal with all mistakes and guilt of past. Can anyone relate and offer advice.? I am so ashamed- but am no better than anyone else. If you read my profile you will understand more. I don't need anyone telling me I shouldn't be a teacher because of my past problems-- trust me-- I am my worst critic. I am also bi-polar- but medication seems to be helping.
Just need to know if anyone else has been in this place and What advice can you offer. Thanks in advance. also have never done drugs before or during school hours and teaching is ONLY thing that I love to do.Health Question & Answer

Of course drug addicts come from all walks of life. Let us not get our wires crossed now. The most signifigant breakthrough in the past 100 years regarding recovery is the development of the Twelve Step program. People used to go to rehabs all the time and leave just as hopeless as when they arrived. The founders of A.A. worked hand and fist with the current Psychatrists and psycologists of their day. The big book is full of quotations from them. Many of the persons throughout the (Big) book were alcoholics and addicts. Nearly half I would say were probably dual diagnosis also.
Let me point out that the first entry into the text is the doctors opinion and that Bill met Bob through a medical model program and Dr. Silkwood who wrote that chapter identifys himself as the director of a hospital that specializes in alcoholic and drug addiction.
Alcoholics Anonoymous was the begining of self led self help groups and it is probably the most imitated model of them all worldwide.
Lately however their has been some conflict with people who abuse prescription drugs as well and man folks don't consider people who take meds to be truly clean and sober. That's preposterous!, B.S.

A.A. was originaly called the fellowship and later renamed A.A. after the book came out . Tradition 3 from the 12x12 tells that the original Akron group decided to accept drug addicts in their folds before the Big Book even went to print. Doctor Bob, was a doctor and Bill W. wrote that if a person should need to be hospitalized or even needs a shot of Morphine to cope with withdrawl he should have it and if a person needs medication he should have it. Don't let anybody shame you out of your recovery.

I am proud to me a member of a group called DRA (Dual Recovery Anonymous) out text is Recovery and Dual Disorders and it specifically addresses mental and emotional illness along with recovery from drugs and or alcohol. Off of the top of my head I think their website is WWW.draonline.org andd the book is published by Hazleden and send me a reply and I'll give you some more addresses etc. and so on. Padre is a nickname my children gave me, my name is (still) Bob and I'm a dualie too. (Dual Diagnosis)Health Question & Answer

Many people with bipolar disorder also have addictions. These are tied together because as your symptoms of bipolar starting happening, you probably did what most people do, party to not think about it. You just needed it more as a coping mechanism.

You are not a bad person, you are a person fighting against your mental illness and addiction. Keep taking your meds and going to therapy, as well as doing whatever you are doing for your addiction (AA or NA). This should be your top priority. You should work on the self hate and guilt you feel as you can't change the past, you can only change the here and now. You must take care of yourself.

All this being said, if you want to teach, then do it. You can bring alot to the table with your experiences. Maybe you could consider working in an different setting, like a day treatment for others with mental illness or an alternative school setting. If these places won't trigger you to use that is! You can be more of yourself in these places and your experiences will actually help you do a better job.Health Question & Answer

i am just starting out moving on without getting plastered on alcohol, but yeah drug addicts come from all walks of life and face a lot of stigma and judgement from other people. they dont realise that most of started doing it because we had emotional/mental health issues that began to spiral out of control. they just think you're selfish and need to get buzzed. well thats why i started doing it anyway, but i'm determined to stop it.

the only advice i have is to keep yourself busy so that you arent thinking about drugs all the time. get a video game system or something to do in the evenings, it helps me to play my wii when I start thinking about alcohol. soon im having so much fun in a healthier way.Health Question & Answer
