Help! I think this psychiatrist gave me a complex?!

Question: Help! I think this psychiatrist gave me a complex.?
I saw a male psychiatrist for childhood issues and body image problems. One day I said to him I doubt a man would want me without me having plastic surgery on my nose and getting teeth whitened. (For the record my teeth are not bad, but nose is slightly too big and I would like it smaller).

And he said, 'Well do you think thats an option then.?'

And I said, "Are you saying you think I need it"

And he said, "Well you do have a big nose."

Ever since seeing him I have believed I was ugly because I think even a 50 year old psychiatrist told me I was ugly. Since then (last year) I've been on a strict diet - I never eat dessert or anything nice and I'm always killing myself at the gym.

Do you think he was out of line saying that.? also I have started believing I wasnt good enough after he said that and I dont know how to change that.Health Question & Answer

Your therapist was very much out of line if he made that comment. That is a personal opinion and therapy is NOT about personal opinions.

I suggest that you seek out another therapist. All therapist are not quacks and most are professional and are there to help.Health Question & Answer

Wow, I'm surprised he's been in business long enough to be able to even see you, let alone talk to you like that! What a douche bag.

I'm concerned with how you're "killing yourself at the gym" though. That can be good or bad. I can certainly assess your program (and diet) and see if we can figure something out that'll give you a little breathing room + allow you to really see some great progress. why do the diet..it s your face..he was being honest I dont think mean, however it was blunt..

You walked into it by asking..don't slam him bc he s 50..he prb. deals with lots of women who just whine..well his ANSWER is do something about it..get your TEETH fixed..TEETH make the biggest difference...

As far as the nose surgery thats up to you ..but dont just complain about it to whoever lisens..take action if its such a HUGE deal..Health Question & Answer

they are all quacks and just care about money, assholes they areHealth Question & Answer

He's such an asshole. I had similar experience, but I'd say more mild one. Once, my therapist asked: Why do you hate yourself.?

Me: Because I hate the way I look.
Doc: Do you hate yourself all the time.?
Me: Yeh. I hate the way I look most of the time, but sometimes I like the way I look, suprisingly.
Doc- [he looked surprised and said], so there are times you actually like the way you look.?

At the end of the day, I felt he just confirmed that I look ugly. And he was like over 60, ancient men. And I thought the same thing that you did. Maybe I was overreacting and over-reading, but it sure didn't feel good. I quit him right away.

My point is- change your therapist. It helps. And stop killing yourself with gmn works, that asshole doesn't deserve your attention.Health Question & Answer

We first have to remember that Mental Health professionals are people, too. They will sometimes say things that are kind of inappropriate. In my experience, the appropriate response to your question should've been: "Do you believe that you need to have your nose worked on.? Let's discuss that."

I don't think that he was trying to make you uneasy about your self-image. He was being honest (in a very blunt way). The fact that he knew you had body image issues (since that's the reason you went to see him in the first place) probably should've indicated to him that he needed to be sensitive to this and gage his responses.

However, most psychiatrists aren't very good at the talk therapy thing since they're more accustomed to just diagnosing and giving prescriptions.

Regardless of his professional approach the important thing is: You are not comfortable with this doctor. Stop seeing him. Go see a different psychiatrist. You have every right to try out different psychiatrists until you find one who serves your needs and is able to help you. It's not rude or inappropriate for you to do this. In fact, it's very common.Health Question & Answer
