Depression or schizophrenia?!

Question: Depression or schizophrenia.?
i'm 24 years old .i was normal until the age of 17,when i started to find erectile dysfunction , i became upset and started to lose interest in studying in my college, i flunked many times ,then,at the age of 22, obsessions in the form of suspicions in my religious beliefs filled my head, following that , a severe depressive episode full of sadness , hopelessness and terror continued for 4 months , i get rid of it via medications.now my mood is not depressed but i feel really exhausted, not interested in nearly all activities ,do not want to leave home , do not go to my college since 2006 , feel normal things to do need great efforts from me , do not wash my face as i used to do,do not take a shower except every long time , do not feel want to meet or even call my friends.last march i was diagnosed as "simple schizophrenia" depending on that i've negative symptoms.i was put on abilify but i left it after one month of using it .do you think anti-psychotics can really help me.?i don't have hallucinations or delusions.recently,i feel very decreased appetite and feel want to vomit.sorry for my poor english language.thanksHealth Question & Answer

It does sound like negative symptoms of schitzophrenia....but i thought schitzophrenia required having both positive and negaive sympoms. I could be wrong as I dont know that Illness as well as others(know symptoms, but not the full diagnostic criteria). Anti psychotics can be useful for other things. Ive taken an anti psychotic for manic episodes, even though there was no psychosis involved. One month may not have been enough to find out if it would help. Should try what your Dr puts you on and not just quit....if it has been given enough time to begin to help, and is not helping, then your Dr should change the dose or change to a different med. You need to comunicate with your Dr to try to find what works for you. If your Dr is not working WITH you to find something that works well for you, then you need to find a new Dr. You also should try to see a therapist in addition to medsHealth Question & Answer

You should see psychiatrist you seem better but not fully recovered and by what you are telling us i think your depression is beginning to come back so see a psychiatrist quickly. Normally you don't really go of antidepressants, you normally take it for a long time to prevent depression coming back.Health Question & Answer

You should see a new doctor. You probably need a new medication, the one you have now is not working how you need it to. Get to a doctor, he can help you. Don't try to do this on your own.Health Question & Answer

Anti- psychotics help many symptoms. I'm on seroquel for a mood stabilizer and it works grest for me. Medicines may be a good idea again sounds to me like your depressed not psychotic at all.

Sometimes symptoms like these could mean bipolar mania instead of schizophrenia. If you have extreme "highs" then it may be that you are just feeling the effects of bipolar disorder.

How long have you been on medication.? For example: when I first started some of my medications I felt the same symptoms as you do now--not wanting to eat or sleep, nausea, and I did not want to be around friends or family.

The term anti-psychotic only means that it softens the mood swings that you have over time. For a while you won't be the happiest camper, but you will not be the saddest person either. So as your brain waves sync up with the medicine, things will be somewhat stressful.

After your body re-adjusts to the effects of the medicine you will start to feel better, but you must take your prescriptions! If you stop suddenly, the chemicals in your body will regress, and you will go back to being depressed and may have extreme mood swings. Take a few days off and let your body adjust and rest. Watch some uplifting movies and take in some chocolate (chocolate releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel at peace) and make sure to get some exercise (don't overwork yourself, though).

Hope this helps a little bit.Health Question & Answer

Schizophrenia is not all about having hallucinations or delusions. My brother suffers from bipolar, and paranoid schizophrenia. What it means is to have obsessive thoughts - usually negative. Some people here a voice in there head, others don't.
My brother has explained the feeling like it's as if he is driving a car with his eyes closed - he lives in a world of scary uncertainty.
His medication has helped him very much...but this is something that you will need to deal with, and learn to cope with. Try the medication and allow some time for it to take affect. Don't rip your self off of feeling better! Feeling good is worth it!Health Question & Answer
