You could try a mild sedative such as Temazepam (Restoril (In Canada)) which is a Benzodiazepine. It's in a class of drugs that can be very effective with anxiety, sleeping, etc.

Works extremely well. Doses of 15 to 30 mg. Combine it with Melatonin (Natural sleeping supplement, a body hormone, 3 or 5 mg) and you'll get a very sleepy and "drowsy" effect.

Benzodiazepines like Temazepam, however, can be addictive after 3 weeks. I only take mine on the weekdays, and have two days when I don't take them on the weekend. And I don't go through withdrawal, but I don't recommend you doing what I do. Use it for short term use.

Be careful with the Tylenol PM. It contains Acetaminophen, which can be toxic to your liver at doses of higher than 1000mg. And it contains Diphenhydramine, an Antihistimine. It's not actually a sleeping drug, more like an allergy drug that can cause sedation and decreased motor effects. Maybe, drop the tylenol PM and buy something with only Diphenhydramine or Dimenhydrinate (Same thing as Diphenhydramine, but weaker. 25 mg DPH = 50 mg DMN)

Lunesta (Escopliclone) COULD be used for your insomnia, and it is a nonbenzodiazepine, however, the 6 to 12 mg doses commonly prescribed can be compared to 20mg of Valium, an anti-anxiety and sedating drug, which IS a benzodiazepine. also, Lunesta also has some withdrawal effects.

Seroquel (Quetiapine) is prescribed OFF label (Meaning, it's intended use is not for sleeping disorders, but rather for schizophrenia) but it has sedating effects, and many doctors have prescribed it off label. It does have withdrawal effects, but not as pronounced as the drugs before.

Chamomile tea, and melatonin are the only drugs that won't result in withdrawal or terrible side effects other than sleepiness, or mild sleepiness.

Ask your doctor about these drugs, and talk to him about the ones you are one, and the ones you want to try out. He'll know the best, he studied in university. also, maybe take a look at different sleep therapies. Some may work.Health Question & Answer

Amytriptyline, Elavil are inexpensive and widely prescribed for sleep. They make you sleepy and don't cause a problem if you do not take them. There's no concern in becoming accustomed to them & needing them to sleep.

Sedatives relax you & can help you sleep. The class is called benzodiazapine: xanax, klonipin. They are widely used for anxiety. Can be taken as needed. If taken on a nitely basis, perhaps depend on them.

Hypnotics will put you to sleep quickly: ambien, zolpidem. They can be expensive and are most effective taken on a short-term basis.
Can be taken as needed.

Any sleep rituals such as getting a bath, reading...can help signal to the brain that it's time to go to sleep. You've got to figure out what is causing the difficulty in the long run. Is it a physical problem, a pain, perhaps or are things particularly stressful right now.? Discussing whatever it is with the doctor will help him decide the appropriate one for you. (The first ones listed might just be the ticket since you're on trazadone.)Health Question & Answer

1. do not take tylenol PM for the sole purpose of going to sleep everynight. it messes up your stomach and your body.
2. Trazadone causes a HIGH dependency. even if you take a small dosage, it can cause emotional instability. It also is not good for your heart and stomach (hence the stomach pain).
3.not to down your question but prescription sleep aids are generally very bad for you. they may help you sleep but in the long run they cause dependency and do more harm than good. Same goes for most controlled pharmaceuticals (especially pain killer i.e. oxycodone).

to be perfectly honest my best advice is marijuana. preferably if you live in a state with prop 215 (legal for medical use). BUT and this is a big thing, do not smoke it, use a vaporizer. a vaporizer heats the pot up and releases the thc. Studies have shown NO adverse short term or long term physical health effects of marijuana when vaporized or ingested with food. I was in the same situation. i had insomnia for the better part of a year and was prescribed all sorts of pills and useless things. my doctor suggested it to me and i was VERY skeptical but i was desperate to sleep. i vaporized it for about a month every night around 10pm and went RIGHT TO SLEEP. after the month i went to every other night then eventually to only when i couldnt sleep which is now not often at all. As far as addiction goes, i have noticed nothing. no cravings or wanting to use it unnecessarily. i have noticed no lung problems or coughing and i used to smoke cigarettes. May not be the thing for your but it was a miracle for me!Health Question & Answer

I started on Temazepam, but that only worked for me for 4-6 hours so my doctor put me on clonazepam.

I don't take it every night and once I take it, I need to go to bed. It kicks in within 30-60 minutes and lasts several hours. If I take it too late at night, I will be quite groggy in the morning, so I try to take it no later than 9.

I recently started using earplugs which have actually been very successful in helping me sleep. I have a very active mind, so when I am able to shut out most of the noise around me, I sleep quite well. I'd rather use earplugs than take pills!

also, increasing your exercise and keeping a healthy diet will also help you sleep better.Health Question & Answer

I personally like rozerem. It isn't like other prescription sleep aides, it doesn't cause dependence.Health Question & Answer
