Aquatic physical therapy?!

Question: Aquatic physical therapy.?
So right now I am in college and I am an education major buut i would absoluty love to go into aquatic physical therapy as well. My dream would be to work with children through aquatic physical therapy. However, I am concerned on whether or not I could go into both. I have a meeting with my advisor at the end of the week buuuut I was wondering if anyone on here would happen to know what it takes to be able to become an aquatic physical therapist.? Thanks!Health Question & Answer

I agree with Misty about the requirements of become a general PT first prior to specializing but there are plenty of pediatric therapist that use aquatics. Karen Dake, PT, PCS has a private practice in Saratoga Springs which has an amazing aquatics program.

Her website is

If you emaill Karen on her site, I am sure that she can give you whatever you are looking for.Health Question & Answer

This would certainly be a niche field and of course, you would first become a standard physical therapist. If you want to work with children, there are no further specific requirements, although clinical specialty training does exist.

I would venture to say the vast majority of aquatic based programs, however, are intended for either geriatric, chronic pain or spinal cord injury (or other neurological diagnoses). There really isn't MUCH market to do pediatrics in the water...mostly because the main reasons to use aquatics are to: reduce joint impact, protect against falls or eliminate the force of gravity to induce movement that's otherwise hard to achieve.

If you want to work in aquatics, expect the VAST majority of your clients to be adults (often elderly, often overweight, or with paralysis.)

Most pediartic therapy is land based because the clients are usually small and easy to handle, even if they have significant neurological deficits.Health Question & Answer
