Psychologist + Psychiatrist?!

Question: Psychologist + Psychiatrist.?
Can you be "both"

I want to be able to therapy people, and still prescribe them medicine if needed. I know that they are different, but can you earn degrees for "both" or such. My dream is to become a psychiatrist who really can help people deal with their problems. It's not selfless either, it's just a feeling of happyness; while knowing that I'm the only one they can go to.

but, anyways, back to topic question. Can I be hired and practice both jobs at once.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I'm a psychologist, which means I have a PhD. and not an M.D. A psychiatrist is an M.D. so can give prescriptions, but a psychiatrist also gives therapy to people, oversees the other therapy people receive, and can 'step in' if anything goes wrong. The biggest difference is that psychiatrists generally deal with 'medical problems' that affect the mind, from schizophrenia to paranoia to depression. Psychologists can do similar therapy under a psychiatrist, or can work on their own to help people solve their problems that don't have a physical reason. If you want to prescribe medicine, you must first go through medical school, then internship (in some hospitals) and residency ... some may 'know' they want to be a psychiatrist right away and go straight to residency, while others may take the 'internship' so they can 'try out' all of the different specialties, from surgery to psychiatry. If you become a psychiatrist, you don't need to become a psychologist, but your specialty will focus more on the 'medical mental health disorders' while a psychologist (which takes just as long to get the PhD as the medical school and residency to become an M.D. who is a psychiatrist, works more with the non-medical disorders, or 'neuroses.'Health Question & Answer

A "psychiatrist" treats more with medication than with couseling per se. A "psychologist" does not treat with medication but with more of the mental aspect of mental issues. A "psychiatrist" is more interested in the chemistry of the body as it pertains to mental issues and how medication helps or does not helps with mental illness He prescribes from a "physiological" point only. A "psychologist" only treats "behaviors" from thought processes. He does not treat mental illness with medication. I think you have be one or the other because they both are opposite of one another. Lots of luck!Health Question & Answer
