Well I know that pain can make you vomit and pass out. Die.? Perhaps. Pain does cause some very real physical responses in the body, it's not just in the mind. Some of the things pain causes include accelerated heart rate, increased blood pressure, and decrease immune function. It's basically a form of stress on the body. Could extreme pain outright kill.? I've never heard of it, but constant unrelenting pain can render a person's body so vulnerable to other problems that it could possibly lead to death. also, those susceptible to stroke and heart attack may die from those problems as a result of the physical responses pain causes. I agree 100% with what calripken has written above. A person can die from the stress of going through that pain if the pain remains untreated. When you are in intractable pain your blood pressure rises, in some individuals this causes additional problems when not properly managed, to the point where they develop serious health crises related to that constant rising bp.Health Question & Answer
Good question. I've fainted from physical pain (broken bones) and my heart has skipped beats from severe pain (two teeth abcessed at the same time). When my teeth were abcessed, I WANTED to die, because the pain was so so severe... I hoped to die, but I survived. I suppose, if a person had a weak heart, the pain might cause heart failure... but I don't know of any cases where a person died from pain alone.
Some pain, like the abcessed teeth I've gotten over the years (here's hoping I can soon afford dentures) has to be endured like a "jack@ss in a West Texas hailstorm," as my uncle used to say. There are precious few trees in West Texas, and many hailstorms in the summer. Livestock pretty much has to just stand there and "take it." When I get tooth abcesses, before I have access to a good pain killer, I just have to "take it" as it gets worse and worse and worse...

Sometimes it may feel that way,but no. Pain can be dealt with through pain management Clinics. Talk to your Dr. I go to pain management because I suffer from excruciating pain everyday of my life. But I never heard of anyone actually dying from pain itself. Good Luck.Health Question & Answer
