Trimethoprim and Penicillin?!

Question: Trimethoprim and Penicillin.?
Please help, I have cystitis AGAIN really badly and only have 2 trimethoprim tablets in the house. I can't go to the out of hours surgery as I have small kids in bed and don't have anyone who can look after them.
Does anyone know if Ican I take 1 Trimethoprim tab with a penicillin tonight and the same in the morning until I can get to my GP.?
I know the drugs are from different families but don't know if they can be mixed.
I'm not any other medication and I have no known allergies.

Thanks for your helpHealth Question & Answer

Penicillin is a poor choice for managing a UTI with not much better than a 55% pick up for amoxicillin, if you are talking about penicillin itself (PenV or PenVK) it has no effect. Basically don't take it. Trimethoprim sensitivity does vary from area to area depending on how frequently it has been used by the local GPs, but is probably no less than 80%. It is thus reasonable to take this.

It might be worth taking a urine sample before you take the first tablet. If you have an MSSU bottle handy in the house all the better. If not use any small bottle but wash it out with boiling water first. Store the sample in the fridge overnight and it will then be usable by your practice tomorrow morning to send to the lab.

Drink plenty of fluid, I am sure you are already aware that the use of cranberry juice for acute UTIs has been shown to be ineffective, though it may have a minor effect as a prophylactic, so any clear fluid is fine.

If you do do this you need to ensure that you get a few more tablets of Trimethoprim tomorrow, 3 days total is felt to be enough, if you only take the 2 tablets there is both a high risk of failure and a risk that the organisms that remain will be resistant.

Hopefully if you have had a large number of infections this has already been investigated, if not it should be!Health Question & Answer

If you regularly suffer from cystitis, try mixture of potassium citrate. It is a much cheaper treatment than other over the counter products. Check with your pharmacist first, as you shouldn't take it if you have heart problems, kidney failure or are breast feeding. Not only will it be cheaper than paying a prescription fee, you don't have to wait for a GP appointment to get it.
If you do get frequent bouts of cystitis, then it's handy to have in. There are other things to try also. When you go to the toilet, sit a minute longer after you think you have emptied your bladder & you will pass a little more. Don't have very hot baths & avoid perfumed feminine products. Always wipe front to back, wear cotton or natural fibre underwear, avoid tights (stockings or hold ups are healthier) & tight clothing. Finally, drink plenty of fluids & take care.Health Question & Answer

You can check the drug interactions checker....you just type in the names of the meds you are taking or going to take and they tell you the risks. But as you know its always BEST to ask the doctor or doctors who prescribed you the two medications. Good luck and i hope this helps.Health Question & Answer

To find these web sites and more all you have to do is go to google or yahoo search engine and type in "drug checker" or "drug interaction checker"
