OK, I'll answer this in English without the wiki copy and pastes that others are doing.

Lidocaine is a pain killer, it's not a big deal.

Epinephrine is a stimulant, synthetic adrenaline. It's used for people with allergies to insect bites, nut allergies and so on. When someone goes into allergic shock (anaphylaxis), they inject the Epi (usually in a syringe that looks like a pen) into their thigh for at least 10 seconds. This will dilate the bronchioles (open his lungs) so that he can breath, while constricting his vascular system so that his blood pressure doesn't drop too far, saving him from cardiogenic and hypovolemic shock.

I deal with this stuff every day, it's not a big deal and your BF isn't abusing drugs. These are necessary drugs for those that need them...of which I am one!

Lidocaine
Stabilizes neuronal membranes by inhibiting the ionic fluxes required for the initiation and conduction of impulses, thereby effecting local anesthetic action.

Epinephrine
Stimulates both alpha- and beta-receptors within sympathetic nervous system; relaxes smooth muscle of bronchi and iris and is an antagonist of histamine.

Indications and Usage
Production of local or regional anesthesia by infiltration techniques such as percutaneous injection, by peripheral nerve block techniques such as brachial plexus and intercostals, and by central neural techniques such as lumbar and caudal epidural blocks.

Lidocaine is a local anesthetic- as an example, it is what doctors use to numb an area that they're going to stitch up.
Epinephrine is a stimulant similar to adrenaline. It speeds up your heart rate, etc.It is used most commonly to relieve respiratory distress due to bronchospasm, to provide rapid relief of hypersensitivity reactions to drugs and other allergens, and to prolong the action of infiltration anesthetics. They also use it to treat congestion due to hay fever, rhinitis, and acute sinusitis, and to relieve asthma symptoms.Health Question & Answer

In plain language,

lidocaine is what the doctor injects around a cut before putting in stitches to close the wound. It kills the pain.

epinephrine in the lidocaine helps constrict the blood vessels in the area so it won't bleed so much while the doctor is suturing it up.

You never want to use the epinephrine in areas that stopping the blood flow may cause problems: fingers, toes, penis, nose, etc.Health Question & Answer

I work in an ER. Lido with epi as its called in the ER is used to numb someone up before they get stitches or staples. The Lidocaine is the numbing agent and the Epinephrine helps to control blood flow from a laceration or cut. However, he should not have this in his room. It is used only by doctor to inject under the skin if injected in a vein it could kill him.Health Question & Answer
