Question: Why is it that people hiccup.?
I've heard from other people things like "It's because your heart skips a beat" but I have never really been sure, also I get the hiccups everydayHealth Question & Answer
Answers:
When you hiccup, your diaphragm and nearby muscles convulse, causing you to briefly gulp air. Within 35 milliseconds the glottis (the opening at the top of the air passage) slams shut, producing the characteristic "hic."

During a process of a day, or for some people months your diaphragm is constantly applied pressure like breathing, or eating to fast...and the hiccups are the way your body releases this tension....Yawning is also another example of this...but these are just guesses most doctors and scientists will tell you their is no factorial explanation though...Health Question & Answer
I get the hiccups every single day (it drives me crazy sometimes!) but I was told that my large intestine is allergic to my diaphragm. Every time they touch it causes you to get the hiccups. I don't know if that's true for everyone or not, but it makes sense. also if you eat too much too fast it happens, and I think it might be the same reason.Health Question & Answer
