Answers:
For the same reason some people abuse alcohol, drugs, sex...food even. It gives a release of emotional pain and even a very temporary high. It becomes an addiction and becomes extremely difficult to recover from but it is possible. Most people do not do it for attention or because they think its cool or because their favorite emo band does it. A lot of people who do it hide it from their families and friends and struggle severely emotionally with it. It's more prevalent than we realize and the ignorance of others out there towards this is sad. People need to be educated so they can better understand and support others.Health Question & Answer

Because when people see the cut marks on their arms they assume they have a problem. Then these people give them some sort of attention or try to help them and eventually the emo kids want more and more of that kind of attention. It's really all about attention......Health Question & Answer

I cut a few years ago, when i was 17. Cutting is a realease from tension for some people, at least for me it was. This doesn't make me "emo" or ness. suicidal. It just is a way to deal with hurt and pain. It's not healthy or good to do. I don't know about a statistical number of people.
