It's horrible, isn't it.? I had this problem too.. and it messes up your cycle completely!! Anyway, here's a few suggestions:

Try exercising during the day -- not before bed, even if you suspect this will make you tired, it won't! It will get you pumped up. So try to exercise a few hours before bed.

No sugar/caffeine after 7 pm -- try cutting out caffeine and sugar after dinner time. Try cutting out caffeine throughout the day as well, you might not think it makes a difference, but even one can of soda can affect you!

Melatonin -- I know you said no pills, but this is not a sleeping pill, but a vitamin. You will not become dependent on it and it won't knock you out. It makes you a little drowsy... it's made for fixing your sleep cycle, so you can sleep when you want to. A lot of people take this for jet lag (when they've traveled and are in a different time zone and need to sleep at the appropriate time of day!)

Good luck with this. I know how annoying it can be, it plagued me throughout high school. If you must, talk to a doctor about it! Sleep is important!

I used to have this problem too. I found the best thing to do is to take a shower or bath about an hour before oyu go to sleep. Use lavender lotion or body wash, because the scent helps you to relax. also, try reading a book while you are laying in bed, because reading relaxes your eyes. It also helps to have soothing music on, and comfortable pj's.. Do not drink tea before bed unless it is pepperment tea, or a kind that you don't need to put sugar in, because it will keep you awake longer..

Good luck!Health Question & Answer

some activity is good to burn off some energy but too much can overstimulate and get your endorphins going...sometimes it can be a bad bed, it was for me, I was tossing and turning way too much at night and never got comfortable...the only thing that helped me was a couple hits of ganj...there is some sleepytime herbal tea that could work or even the age old remedy of a warm glass of milk, but I could never get used to warm milk...or maybe try reading a really boring and tedious book with wery little light, it sure makes me drowsy and If nothing else I take an ambien if I'm desparate...good luckHealth Question & Answer

Exercise before bed can actually contribute to the problem because it raises your metabolism. A really good natural way to become sleepy is to have a sexual release. This causes your brain to release endorphins which make you sleepy, as well as happy! It also helps me to have white noise in the background like a fan or a recording of rain fall. Do you have a lot on your mind.? Last year I could never get to sleep (I still have trouble sometimes) because I just couldn't stop thinking. If that's the case, try writing down how you're feeling.

Another thing that helps me fall asleep is the scent of lavender.Health Question & Answer

Read a book that always makes me really sleepy. If you want also you could exercise 2 hours before you go to bed that way when you are ready to go to bed its easier for you to fall asleep.Health Question & Answer

Definitely walk every night! That seems to do the trick, and walking is the best exercise. Keep doing all those other things you have to do. Nothing wrong with those! I can't sleep without covers either! :)Health Question & Answer

mmm it seems that exercise makes you tired. Try going on a jog before you go to bed and if that doesn't help, then try getting one of those CD's with the different setting sounds like a beach. Health Question & Answer
