Acid reflux can happen also to healthy people once in a while.. it all depends what you ate.. if you ate hot spicy food...that can do it.. if you get it frequently.. you might have a defective valve.. that is the valve which separates the chest from the stomach.. if that valve doesn't close as it should.. then acid can come back up into your chest anytime.. and it is a buring boring feeling behind the lower end of the sternum.. like fire...Cold water won't do any harm... I wouldn't drink Ice cold water.. you may feel you need it.. better is to get some over the counter prescription... against stomach acid...or tumms... may do the trick.. they have different flavours... also several medications can cause heartburn.. if you have it only on occasion.. too much stress, too much coffeeine.. too much chocolate.. all that.. too spicy.. that causes stomach acid to flow back up into the esphagus.. your food pipe and that's why it burns in your chest...talk to your doctor if it is a severe problem.. prilosec... I believe is the name helps for stubborn cases of acid reflux.. spicy meals, a defective valve at the end of the esophagus which won't stay closed, or a hiatus hernia.. where the chest cavity and the diaphragm meet.. there is your diaphragm and in hiatus hernia.. part of the stomach.. moves up through the valve into the chest cavity.. most of the time.. it goes back right away.. then the acid feelingt disappears.. and a sliding hernia normally needs nothing doing to it.. only if you have a different more complicated kind of hiatus hernia.. they would close the valve by laser surgery.. not a big deal...it needs over the counter anti acid medication if you get it badly.. or tums can get rid of it...if you had it one time.. then i recommend.. put an extra pillow under your head and upper body.. to not allow the acid to flow up when you are in bed and don't have a late snack... eat no later than 7 pm.. and then no more.. that way you prevent stomach acid to cause the burning feeling.. we all have stomach acid.. that is good because it kills the bacteria.. when our stomach absorbs food.. Eat several smaller meals throughout the day instead of 2 big meals.. that also helps... not to have a very full stomach.. rather drink some relaxing tea.. the burning is not really caused by a fire and water will not get rid of it.. but you can drink cool water but not icy cold water.. that won't help....I suffer from acid reflux .. so I know I have a defective valve which causes mine...don't worry about it if it is a once in a blue moon occasion .. if it happens a lot.. mention it to your doctor...Health Question & Answer

You may have slowed digestion, causing stomach acids to churn & burn. Reasons for slower digestion may include: overweight, smoking, hiatal hernia, certain medications, large meals, etc.

Diet can increase stomach acid level: tomatoes (juice too), onion, peppers, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, spices, chocolates, caffeine, citrus (including juice) all aggravate the stomach. Avoid eating for at least 2 hours before lying down at night.

Following these suggestions alone may be enough to control stomach acid. If you frequently get acid reflux, you need to see a doctor, and a medication may be necessary to prevent pain and complications (such as esophagitis). Some are helped with an antacid, like Zantec. Others may go for Pepto Bismol. Still, others require a more intensive medication, a protein pump inhibitor, such as Protonix or Prevacid. I'd also recommend sleeping on your right side, with the head of your head elevated 3".

Your body is genetically programed to create too much acid, or you ate a very spicy meal.

Keep a supply of calcium, or other anti-acids, on hand for immediate relief from such moments. also, many generic acid blocker drugs are available OTC now and can be taken before the evening meal to stop this problem all night.

If it gets worse, or won't go away, see a doc for a proton pump inhibiting drug. That will really work.Health Question & Answer

Lots of good answers here. Olive oil or virgin olive oil may help to wash it down and dilute it. Olive oil is reputed a mild anesthesia, resistant but mixable to acid and is probably good for you. Half joking here, you may need to eat earlier to get ahead of your out of sync ingestion system, i.e. the acid is coming on to early. Just a theory, but your stomach could be hallucinating food in its self.Health Question & Answer
