I have Chronic IBS, is there anyway to keep the attacks at bay without taking 4 tablets a day?!

Question: I have Chronic IBS, is there anyway to keep the attacks at bay without taking 4 tablets a day.?
Answers:
Try writing a food diary for a week and write down at which points in the day you feel worse. It could be you're eating too much veg/fruit or even the types of fruit, like I suffer if I eat a big apple! It should help you to see what it is you are eating and what you can do to try and prevent these attacks. I've found that mine is worse in the afternoon esp if i've had a yogurt with my lunch!
I found it also helped keep track of my daily calorie intake, I know it's not what you're after, but it helps!
Do you exercise at all.? I really found that yoga and Pilates helped with my IBS. I also go the gym 3 times a week straight after work and it really does help.
I hope this has helped a little and that you find relief soon.Health Question & Answer

Rhianna is spot on as she usually is. Only very small doses of Amitriptylline are needed, here they act as a smooth muscle relaxant, not an antidepressant which they are now virtually never used for.
10-20mgs a day is usually all that is needed ( compared to perhaps 150mgs when used as an antidepressant.) Usually the only side effects if any, are dry mouth and very occasionally blurred vision.Health Question & Answer

Treatment often involves taking antidepressants such as amitriptyline, which act as a muscle smoother. Increase fibre in your diet (although some people say this can make their symptoms worse, it's 50/50) avoid caffeine and alcohol and limit the amount of fatty food you eat.Health Question & Answer
