Continue doing it for a long period of time, not just once every blue moon... you are strecthing your muscles over and over again after they sit doing nothing. Continue doing it for a few weeks or even months. Once your body gets used to doing this quite often it wont hurt as bad. Health Question & Answer

Really there is no way to prevent soreness. But when you do splits its not bad that you are sore its actually very good! Because when you get sore that means that you are getting better at your plits :) Aparently if you can do them, you will not be getting sore after a few more times of doing them :)
But if they still hurt you could try taking a both in ice water. It very painful though. I am a gymnast so I have done it. Or a nice hot bath works too! :)

Time is not you friend. The older you get, the worse this is going to be. You can stretch more before and stretch afterwords as well. You could also take an analgesic after your workout to reduce inflammation (Before you hurt)
