Head Lice transmission question?!
Question: Head Lice transmission question.?
Is it possible to contract head lice by hand to head.? My daughters school has teachers that touch each child on the head (hair) as they count them out of the building and classroom etc etc. If one child has head lice can they be spread by this constant touching from head to head.? I have searched ask.com under headlice and have even gone to headlice.org and can find a hundred questions about swimming with lice but not touching... Any doctors or nurses or parents who have been thru this.?Health Question & Answer

It's possible, but not extremely likely. A single, brief touch on the top of the head is probably not enough contact for a louse to crawl onto the hand, and be transferred.
From what I understand, they don't typically like crawling along smooth surfaces, such as bare, bald skin. Now, if the teacher were wearing knit gloves, transference might be more likely, as their would be a surface (the knit fibers) for the lice to quickly grab hold of.
To dreamweaver: No, lice CANNOT jump. Fleas can, but fleas do not infest humans. Lice can only crawl.
also, the most likely transference of lice between students comes as a result of sharing combs/brushes/hair accessories/jackets/hats/scarves, and close head-to-head contact. They're unlikely to spread between students just because they're sitting close together.Health Question & Answer

Lice can be spread if a child in the class room has it. The bugs can crawl from child to child to lay eggs. I'm not sure about the whole touching the hand to head thing. If that was the case I should have caught lice at some point growing up. Relax!Health Question & Answer
