Answers:
Yes, people use it to get high. He probably got them from the streets. If he is overweight, he may be trying to secretly lose weight on his own. When ppl use it to get high, it gives them energy and keeps them awake for a LONG time. It can also cause death, esp. in teenagers. Do a google on it and I'm sure you'll be able to find some stories about this.
He really needs to be taken to the doctor to address the real problem and why he is taking it. also, it's probably NOT the only thing that he is taking. Get some help for him ASAP. Good luck.

I don't think ppl shoot it up but I really don't kknow. It is usually taken by mouth or snorted. Get the child some help fast.Health Question & Answer

I would be very worried. Phentermine was orginally used inside weight loss pills to help increase heart-rate which theirfor increase your "weight loss ability". Because of it's heart increasing, it has a reputation with giving people heart attacks and strokes. My sister used to take them until she found out she was getting very jittery, and headaches. A few people she knew used them had heart attacks.

Please, have a serious conversation! Not just punishment because everybody can deal with that, but disappointment. The idea of telling a child that your seriously and extremely disappointed and they have lost all your trust is more heart breaking and mental crashing which they need than "your grounded for a week". I would try and get it out of him, truthfully before you do a "drug test".

I would also talk to your sons friends parents and see if any of them take or bought these pills.

also, Phentermine is a pill but I believe it could "possibly" be snorted by breaking the pills up, but that seems too much of a hassel.

Please don't be easy on him, break him down, take control and most certainly punish him until proven guilty. He's guilty because you found drugs in his room.Health Question & Answer

I found the following information on medicinecabinet.com. It is a prescrption medication so should not have been in the hands of a teenager with parental knowledge. This teen is not being honest about not knowing where the drug came from. I would have him drug tested to find out what other drugs are in his system. Don't take this lightly, drugs can kill. (Lost my son to prescription drugs five year ago.)

GENERIC NAME: phentermine
BRAND NAMES: Adipex-P, Obenix, Oby-Trim
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Phentermine is a drug that suppresses appetite. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown. It probably decreases appetite by acting on centers in the brain that control appetite. Phentermine is similar to amphetamine. It stimulates the nervous system, elevates blood pressure, and increases heart rate.

PRESCRIPTION: Yes

GENERIC AVAILABLE: Yes

PREPARATIONS: Tablets: 30 and 37.5mg.

STORAGE: Phentermine should be stored in a tight container at room temperature.

PRESCRIBED FOR: Phentermine is combined with diet and exercise for the short-term treatment of obesity in individuals with a body mass index greater than or equal to 30 kg/m2 or greater than or equal to 27 kg/m2 with risk factors for heart disease. Phentermine should not be combined with other weight loss agents. The combination of phentermine and fenfluramine (FEN-PHEN) is associated with serious heart problems. Fenfluramine is no longer available in the United States.

DOSING: The recommended dose is 30 mg once daily about 2 hours after breakfast. Evening doses should be avoided because phentermine causes insomnia.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Phentermine is similar to amphetamine and may share some of the interactions associated with amphetamines. Combining phentermine with tricyclic antidepressants [for example, amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep)] or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (for example, tranylcypromine) may result in high blood pressure and other serious reactions because of elevated serotonin levels in the blood.

Health Question & Answer

People can absolutely abuse this sort of drug. It is an appetite suppresent but it is also an aphetamine (speed). Saying he has no idea how it got in his room is an obvious lie, she needs to sit down with her son and talk to him about why abusing diet pills is dangerous. He could be snorting it but it is just as likely he is taking it orally as you would normally take a pill. I doubt he is shooting it up and you cannot really smoke a pill.Health Question & Answer

"Phentermine may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Keep track of how many pills have been used from each new bottle of this medicine.
