My Merck says they use opioids for pain in dying patients. Morphine is the common one, but there are others, all of them pretty close to heroin in structure and function. If the dying patient is not in pain, I doubt that they would give opioids, although when the patient is very near death they might use something like heroin which makes them go to sleep feeling at peace and may hasten death a little by suppressing breathing. Hospice nurses could give you a definite answer if you know of any.Health Question & Answer
